Neukomm, a disciple of Haydn, travelled all over Europe and Brazil, leaving an immense output too little-know today.
It was in March 1838 that he composed this requiem mass, a grandiose funeral ceremonial combining the dark sonorities of male voices with a brass ensemble and, for the final procession, a tam-tam. The result is both gripping and deeply moving, and the presence of a choir from the Indian Ocean gives this genuine discovery a powerful note of sonic authenticity.
