Image 6CD-BOX: Michael Gielen Edition, Vol. 1: 1967-2010
This release is the first of a ten-volume set of works conducted by legendary Michael Gielen. When it was announced on October 30, 2014 that Michael Gielen would no longer pursue conducting engagements because of health issues, it was decided that to honor this musician a detailed survey of his 50-year career would be made. Hence, the Michael Gielen EDITION was born. Volume 1, presented here, is a 6-disc set that presents works from Bach, Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, and Schubert, recorded between 1967 and 2010. The remainder of this ten-volume set will be released over the course of the next three years. The orchestras featured here are the SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden und Freiburg, Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Saarbrucken, and Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart des SWR.

Image Michael Gielen Edition, Vol. 3: Brahms - Symphonie
This third volume of our Michael Gielen Edition is devoted to music by Johannes Brahms, with all the recordigns taken from the archives of the Southwest German Radio. These recordings were made between April 1989 and January 2005. Michael Gielen enjoyed a felicitous involvement with Brahms' chamber music, particularly the late piano works where, in Schoenberg's words, the "progressive Brahms" is most evident. Maybe that's why Brahms' first piano quartet, orchestrated by Arnold Shcoenberg, sounds so ravishingly sharp under Gielen's direction. The solemnity of Schicksaslied calls for sincere commitment on the part of the conductor. Working as one, the Symphony Orchestra of Baden-Baden and Freiburg and Michael Gielen achieve an interpretation of this work that is both balanced and comforting.

This new release is the latest installment in the Michael Gielen Edition, and it brings a sense of climax to the first four volumes. Of all the sets released so far, this latest volume contains the most first releases- 14 of the 23 works have never been released before, including extensive works such as Berlioz’s Requiem and Schumann’s Scenes from Faust. The set also contains recordings with international stars such as Heinrich Schiff (Dvorak Cello Concerto), Josef Suk (Dvorak Violin Concerto), Gunter Reich (Baritone, Faust) and Ludwig Hoffmann (Weber Piano Concerto No. 2). Other outstanding recordings include two particularly splendid interpretations from the Minnesota Music Festival (Weber’s Freischutz Overture and Weber’s Kaiserwalzer), plus Dvorak’s Violin and Cello Concertos, and Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique. Michael Gielen’s controlled, intense direction is on display in each piece. Gielen was less known for his interpretation of music from the Romantic period. His recordings of such repertoire may form only a small part of his legacy, but they receive outstanding performances here, which will be appreciated not only by fans and collectors of Gielen’s work, but by music lovers in general.

Image Michael Gielen - In Memoriam (3 CD)
This "in memoriam" album contains two recordings of Mahler’s Symphony No. 6, made 42 years apart: the performance from 1971 (first authorised release) and the performance from 2013 at the Salzburger Festspiele (first release on CD). Mahler's No.6 was a central piece in Gielen's repertoire. The contrast between the two performances is dramatic, essentially expressing the full range of Gielen’s approach to Mahler.
