The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra
Patron: Her Majesty the Queen of the Netherlands

The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra is one of the very best orchestras in the world. Time and time again, critics have lauded its unique sound, which clearly stands out among thousands of others. The RCO’s string section has been called ‘velvety’, the sound of the brass ‘golden’, the timbre of the woodwinds ‘distinctly personal’ and the percussion have an international reputation.

While the exceptional acoustics of the Concertgebouw, designed by the architect A.L. van Gendt, also play an important role in this respect, no other orchestra sounds like the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in the Main Hall.

Image Symphony No. 2 (DVD)
The prospect of a new Mahler recording by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra always manages to pique the interest of music lovers far and wide. This has to do with the quality of the orchestra itself, the rich acoustics of the hall with which it shares its name and the long connection it has enjoyed with the music of Gustav Mahler, who personally honoured the Amsterdam-based corps d’élite with four acclaimed guest conducting appearances between 1903 and 1909. The names of Gustav Mahler and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra are inseparable. Willem Mengelberg's pioneering work and Mahler's own guest performances with the orchestra have laid the foundation under the Dutch Mahler cult and the RCO's Mahler tradition, that flourished ever since. During the past years Daniele Gatti has conducted strong and spectacular performances of four Mahler symphonies as a guest conductor. After the Fifth, Ninth, Sixth and Third, Gatti's first Mahler symphony as chief conductor was the Second Symphony. With this recording RCO Live is beginning a new Mahler cycle with Daniele Gatti. PRESS QUOTES: „Gatti's Mahler is astounding.“ Volkskrant // „Gatti is a conductor who makes you reflect on what interpretation really is, should or could be nowadays.“

Image Requiem für Hieronymus Bosch
The famed painter Hieronymus Bosch portrayed medieval life brimming with symbolism, fantasy and riddles. Commemorating the five hundredth anniversary of the artist’s death the RCO commissioned Detlev Glanert to write a requiem for soloists, choir, organ and orchestra. The composition translates the demonic nature of Bosch’s paintings with textual counterparts into music. Glanert combines traditional requiem texts with excerpts from the manuscript collection Carmina Burana – each movement of the Requiem is accompanied by a poem about the seven deadly sins. From the press: "Magnificent terror in new Requiem for Hieronymus Bosch in Amsterdam." Jenny Camilleri, Bachtrack "The performance under the baton of Markus Stenz was spectacular." Would this be the beginning of another RCO tradition? From the press: "… Vogt's interpretation was truly superior. Elder […] knew how to draw magic from the orchestra." With the release of this live recording of Hector Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique, RCO Live celebrates the start of its collaboration with Daniele Gatti as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra's seventh chief conductor on 9 September 2016. Daniele Gatti’s unconventional take on this spectacular score evokes the astonishment audiences must have experienced at the time of the 1830 premiere. It is exactly this sense of surprise and freshness – founded on a thorough knowledge of the score – and the sheer joy of making music together that prompted the members of the RCO to choose Daniele Gatti as their new chief conductor.

Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra / Mariss Jansons

The RCO's performance history of Sergei Rachmaninoff's Second Symphony is strangely uneven. Already three years after its completion the symphony was performed by Willem Mengelberg in a programme that also boasted the composer as soloist in his own Piano Concerto No. 3. After that the symphony was performed again in 1921 and then there's a gap of 59 years. From 1980 on no less than 10 conductors (including Vladimir Ashkenazy, Kirill Kondrashin and Kurt Sanderling) put it on the RCO's music stands.

Its latest RCO incarnation proved to be an ideal performance.: with Mariss Jansons at the helm, heart and mind of this piece were totally balanced and the opulence of the RCO's sound at the Concertgebouw was perfectly suited to Rachmaninoff's most beloved symphony.

The seventh release in RCO Live's Horizon series features world premieres recorded during three concert seasons. Magnus Lindberg's sumptuous 'Era' – a birthday present from the Concertgebouw Hall to the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra - dates from the 2012-2013 season. Both Tan Dun's catchy double bass concerto 'The Wolf' and Richard Rijnvos's 'fuoco e fumo' about the 1996 destruction by fire of the Venetian opera house La Fenice, are from 2015. The programme opens with a beguiling 20-minute work for countertenor, women’s voices and orchestra, 'Dream of the Song', Benjamin’s first work since his ground-breaking opera 'Written on Skin', was premiered in September at Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw by the countertenor Bejun Mehta, the ladies of the Netherlands Chamber Choir and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by its composer. The work sets verse by three major poets who spent formative years in Granada; two Hebrew poets of mid-11th century, Samuel HaNagid and Solomon Ibn Gabirol (sung by solo countertenor in English versions by Peter Cole), and Gabriel Garcia Lorca (sung by the female chorus in the original Spanish). Commissioned by the Royal Concertgebouw, BBC and Boston Symphony Orchestras and the Festival d’Automne, the work received its UK premiere on 18 March with Iestyn Davies, the BBC Singers and BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Oliver Knussen.

Recorded live at Concertgebouw Amsterdam on 17-18 January 2013 (Lindberg), 29-30 January 2015 (Tan Dun), 12 June 2015 (Rijnvos), 25-26 September 2015 (Benjamin).

Traditionally most RCO members love to engage in chamber music as well and the woodwinds section of the orchestra is no exception. In the past woodwind ensembles like the Concertgebouw Sextet (1909-1937) and the Danzi Quintet (1958-1978) have even been very successful outside of the Netherlands. Following the requiem masses of Dvorak and Mozart in previous seasons, this performance of Brahms's German Requiem would have been the third in a long series of Requiems conducted by Mariss Jansons. Unfortunately the 'new tradition' was cut short by Jansons's departure as the RCO's chief conductor during the 2014/2015 season. The performance was dedicated to Kurt Sanderling, one of the orchestra's most beloved guest conductors. He passed away the year before and would have turned 100 that very month. It proved to be a very moving performance, a fitting salute to a great conductor.

Drawing on the wealth of recordings in the Dutch public broadcasting network archives and the archives of the BBC, Deutschlandradio and Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg, this selection emphasizes the extraordinary relationship between Jansons and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. It mixes repertoire commonly associated with the maestro with unexpected treats, such as works by Gubaidulina, Varèse and Louis Andriessen. Recorded live at Concertgebouw Amsterdam on 14-16 September 2011.

During his last years in Vienna Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed only three liturgical works: the short 'Ave Verum Corpus' and two unfinished masterworks: the 'Mass in C minor' and the 'Requiem' in D minor. Most of his sacred oeuvre was written at an early age in the conservative city of Salzburg. The 'Requiem' from 1791 is stylistically far removed from that early church music and suits the concert hall better than the church.

Chief conductor Mariss Jansons leads the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Dutch Radio Choir and a stellar vocal quartet, featuring Genia Kühmeier, Bernarda Fink, Mark Padmore and Gerald Finley in an intense reading of Mozart's last masterpiece.

No collection of recordings from the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra's rich history can offer the listener a truly complete overview. But the present CD box set certainly comes closer than any before it. The Radio Legacy is a compilation of the seven-part Anthology of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the four box sets devoted to the orchestra's chief conductors Willem Mengelberg, Eduard van Beinum, Bernard Haitink and Riccardo Chailly, and also featuring more recent recordings with Mariss Jansons. Drawing on the wealth of recordings in the Dutch public broadcasting network archives, the selection does justice to the unique history of the orchestra. Repertoire, performance, conductors, soloists, and recording quality were the criteria which, proved to be decisive. Indeed, the compilers have worked 'with the awareness that the making of choices brings with it the duty to showcase as many aspects of this history as possible'.

This CD set can thus be seen as an important supplement to the orchestra's musical legacy as reflected by the many releases on record labels over the years. Included in the luxurious box set is ´125 Years in Silent Pictures´, a photo book featuring archival and specially made new photos capturing the orchestra´s history from the very first beginning up to 2013. An index book focusing on composers, conductors and soloists will guide the listener through this vast collection of recordings. The Radio Legacy is a limited edition: no more than 1000 copies are available.
