Spectacular virtuoso playing, bravura passagework and show-stopping melodies are balanced with wistful lyricism and sublime tone painting in this irresistible program of perennial favorites, played with elan by the violinist Arabella Steinbacher. "Great violinists like Heifetz, Kresler, menuhin...played virtuosic pieces in their concerts," recalled Steinbacher in a recent interview. She lamented that such pieces are infrequently played owing to the perception that "...this kind of repertoire is 'not serious enough' which I find is really a pity and also not true." In a change of pace, the album also features the work which has topped Classic FM's listeners' "Hall of Fame" for the last three years running: the much-loved and achingly lyrical The Lark Ascending by Vaughan Williams completed it following the horrors of the First World War. For this recording Arabella Steinbacher plays the "Booth" Stradivari from 1716, a generous loan from the Nippon Music Foundation.

Image Violin Concertos
This release arguably features the two greatest concertos ever written for the violin: performed by one of the most brilliant violinists of her generation, together with one of the finest orchestras, and under the baton of one of the world's foremost conductors. This recording of Tchaikovsky/Mendelssohn violin concertos bears witness to the eminence of the collaboration between violinist Arabella Steinbacher, conductor Charles Dutoit and PENTATONE's Orchestra of the Season January-June 2015, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, and the result thereof. After waiting for a long time to record these concertos with the perfect collaboration,Arabella Steinbacher didn't waste any chance to shine with heart-felt enthusiasm and bravura in this recording. Her performance produced such a pure, yet fierce sound that it allowed the music to speak in an immediate, translucent way. Recorded in September 2014 in the magnificent Victoria Hall, Geneva, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande were totally at home with the repertoires and performed with great confidence;they were led by Dutoit, who was vivid, rhythmic and clear in his direction. The vigorous playing results in a vibrant sound that is captured perfectly in this multi-channel SACD recording.

Marcel Tyberg was an accomplished Viennese composer, conductor and pianist. Unfortunately, due to the conditions of World War II, Tyberg, only 1/16th Jewish, was sent to his death and his musical career was prematurely extinguished. When Marcel Tyberg was murdered at Auschwitz, his music was lost with him. Until now. Anticipating the Nazi movement in his region in 1943, Marcel gathered his friends in secret to share hi smusic one last time. One friend recalled, "There was a childlike joy and tenderness in him taht is only seen in great souls shortly before their return home. The tears ran down my cheeks. We all had the feeling that he will not be with us much longer." That night Marcel entrusted his compositions to a friend - including the two Masses, his only sacred manuscripts that exist today. Only a few days later, Marcel was captured in a night raid by the Nazi Gestapo and later counted among the millions murdered at Auschwitz. His music was kept by friends and eventually ended up in Buffalo, NY where the Buffalo Philharmonic began uncovering his symphonies in 2008. Tyberg's Masses reverberate the joy of a devout man and brilliant musician. Their late-Romantic structure and harmonic composition resemble other masters like Mahler and Bruckner, and their symphonic breadth encompass a vast range of human emotion. From the intimate iterations of "Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus" in both Mass settings, to the roaring organ solo in the "Sanctus" of the Messe di fascile in F major, to the painfully beautiful soprano solo in the "Agnus Dei" of the Mass in G major.

Thomas Hampson's acclaimed portrayals of iconic roles in French operatic works have spanned the duration of his singular international career. A longtime champion of French repertoire, he has starred in the title roles of Chausson's Le roi Arthus at Opéra National de Paris; Massenet's Werther (baritone version) at The Metropolitan Opera and Théâtre National du Châtelet; Massenet's Thaïs (Athanaël) at Lyric Opera of Chicago and The Metropolitan Opera; Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann (Four Villains) at the Royal Opera House - Covent Garden; and Thomas' Hamlet at the Théâtre National du Châtelet. He has also performed in Massenet's Manon (Lescaut), Gounod's Faust (Valentin), Berlioz' Les Troyens (Chorèbe), and Poulenc's Les mamelles de Tirésias (Gendarme). Additionally, Hampson has been featured on critically lauded recordings of Faust, Les Contes d'Hoffmann, Thaïs, and Werther. Mr. Hampson carries the title of Commandeur dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres of the Republic of France.

With "Serenade," his first album exclusively dedicated to French song, Mr. Hampson brings his passion for works by French opera composers to the PENTATONE label. Curated with the French Literature scholar Sylvain Fort and in a first collaboration with the Polish pianist Maciej Pikulski, the track listing includes romantic and introspective as well as humorous selections by Bizet, Chabrier, Chausson, Gounod, Magnard, Massenet, and Saint-Saëns, featuring texts written by some of France's most revered writers including Victor Hugo, Paul Verlaine, Rosemonde Gérard, and others.

Image Violin Sonatas
A stunning recital of romantic sonatas from Arabella Steinbacher, whose recent disc of Mozart Violin Concertos was a Gramophone Editors Choice. Violinist Arabella Steinbacher and pianist Robert Kulek continue their great collaboration with a new PENTATONE release, the recording of César Francks Sonata for Piano and Violin in A, which joins Richard Strauss Sonata for Violin and Piano in E-flat, Op. 18. While Francks violin sonata is epic in character, Strauss work is full of jovial energy, hope and anticipation. This fusion of elements brilliantly demonstrates the synergy between Steinbacher and Kulek, something we have witnessed during their recital performances over the past few years. Needless to say, both artists possess superb technique. Steinbacher demonstrates her delicate yet fiery touch, most notably in the robust Franck score, while Kulek plays with resolute intonation, steadfast tempo, and broad dynamics. Steinbacher maintains her performance as an equal partner without dominating her counterpart.

NDR Radiophilharmonie / Larry Foster

Johann Strauss Jr. is the most prominent member of the famous musical Strauss family and with more than 500 dance compositions to his name, became known as ‘The Waltz King’. While conducting the world première of his operetta Der Zigeunerbaron at the Theater an der Wien on 24 October 1885, Strauss junior lived one of, if not the biggest, stage successes of his career. Der Zigeunerbaron received 87 successive performances, which made it even more successful than Die Fledermaus and during the composer’s lifetime alone, the operetta was performed in more than 140 theaters.

Originally Strauss intended to perform the 3 act operetta, on a libretto by Ignaz Schnitzer, at the Vienna Court Opera, rather than the Theater an der Wien. Even though this didn’t work out for contractual reasons, it may be seen as a reflection of the composer’s ambition to outgrow the dance hall. Der Zigeunerbaron clearly is a much more dramatic piece than Die Fledermaus and is by many considered to be a comic opera, instead of a genuine operetta. Johann Strauss junior forever stayed The Waltz King, but Der Zigeunerbaron became a success until present day. With the release of this 2-SACD album, now to be enjoyed in a splendid May 2015 recording by the NDR Radiophilharmonie and the NDR Chor conducted by Lawrence Foster.

Matt Haimovitz, cello
Christopher O'Riley, piano

This is the fourth issue of the PENTATONE OXINGALE series. An out of the box double SACD album with works for cello and piano, performed by cellist Matt Haimovitz and pianist Christopher O'Riley, including a booklet containing an interview by way of liner notes. One of the discs contains classical music and the other contains pop music, arranged for cello and piano by Christopher O'Riley.

Which brings the interviewer in the booklet to the following question: "...continuing on this idea of polyvalence, like it or not, people and fans are going to be focusing on this aspect of it."

Matt Haimovitz: "Well, we've been discussing this for months, actually. When we're in concert we go between Stravinsky and Radiohead, and then John McLaughlin and then some Bach and Ravel. But for us it's part of the same trajectory, and it fits seamlessly and naturally in a program. For me, a classical listener will be interested in Radiohead or any of the tunes we're playing on the pop side. I think what we're doing has a sincerity to it. We're getting to the spirit of it. We're translating it in a very different way than the original, and I think they would appreciate that there are some complex things going on contrapuntally, harmonically and lyrically. There's a richness there."

Listen to this highly original album and discover the richness Matt Haimovitz is talking about.

Whether subtle or blatantly rebellious, each work potently reveals the strength of the artistic voice in the face of political repression in mother Russia.

Image Ein Heldenleben & Macbeth
The celebrated young Colombian maestro Andres Orozco-Estrada continues his critically acclaimed series of recordings for Pentatone with this release of the evocative tone poems Macbeth and Ein Heldenleben by Richard Strauss, performed here with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony. These gripping works, with their intricate scoring and compelling narratives, are orchestral tours de force, demonstrating Strauss's gift for filling a huge orchestral canvas with vivd and exquisite details while maintaining a sense of drama. And they are stunningly brought to life in this recording with Pentatone's state of the art multi-channel surround sound. Strauss's brooding tone poem Macbeth is a psychological portait of the main protagonists in the play, the insecure and vacillating Macbeth and his wife, the ambitious but deranged Lady Macbeth. Strauss's often highly charged score suggests the mounting horror and dread of the ill-fated couple and their domestic unease, the work ending on a sombre ntoe following their deaths and the triumphal march of Macduff. In Strauss's striking and florid masterpiece Ein Heldenleben, there's little doubt who the real hero is but Strauss himself. While he was roundly mocked at the time for his audacity, there's also little doubt that this bold and dramatic tone poem is no mere cornucopia of orchestral effects - it's a life-affirming work which ends not in a triumphal blaze, but in a mood of quiet resignation.

Image Symphony No. 4
Mahlers Symphony No. 4 portrays another side of the composer, different to the one hitherto seen by the general public. No major battles are fought in this symphony; rather, it is a portrayal of a childlike vision of life and a better world in the Hereafter. Mahlers Dutch friend and colleague, Alphons Diepenbrock, may well have provided the most fitting description of the nature of this symphony and its position within Mahlers oeuvre: [...] in his Symphony No. 4, he exclusively praises the sensations of the soul, severed from all earthly ties, from various angles either as childish yet unearthly merriment, or as the highest ecstasy attained by mystics in bygone years during the contemplation of the divine. However, one should not search for irony here. The work is like a beautiful dream, an indispensable link in the series of Mahlers nine symphonies that speak sufficiently of harsh reality, and that, according to some, will one day be considered the monumental musical oeuvre of the present day. The Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra lives up to its reputation for its brilliant Mahler performances and surpasses all expectations under the baton of conductor Marc Albrecht. And Elizabeth Watts performance in the final movement is surely one not to be missed. The chemistry between Watts and the orchestra is utterly pervasive. With a voice described by International Record Review as one of the most beautiful Britain has produced in a generation, Watts sweeps the listener off their feet with this sunny, accessible symphony from Mahler. The perfect combination of immaculate performance with impeccable PENTATONE sound quality can only result in a magical musical experience.

Image Persephone
Stravinsky’s Perséphone (1934) is a dynamic music-theatrical narration of the myth of Persephone’s abduction to the underworld and return to earth. The transparent, sober but evocative music epitomizes Stravinsky’s sensuous take on Neoclassicism, and the piece showcases Stravinsky’s eclectic, original and highly personal approach to music and musical drama through a playful mixture of several genres – melodrama, song, chorus, dance and pantomime. Ultimately, Perséphone offers Stravinsky’s second ode to spring, albeit without the brutal excesses of Le Sacre.

This album was recorded live during the Helsinki Festival 2017 with a star cast featuring English tenor Andrew Staples and French actress Pauline Cheviller. They join forces with the Finnish National Opera’s chorus, children’s chorus and orchestra, conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen, in a breath-taking performance that lifts out the piece’s transformative power.

The seeds were planted in the early 1970s when Deutsche Grammophon realised what amazing results could be achieved by recording on multi-channel tapes, using either four or eight channels. Yet, due to a few restrictions, they never fully blossomed. Flaws in the playback equipment meant that music connoisseurs were prevented from enjoying these recordings in the way that artists, producers, engineers and other professionals intended, even though recording technology was already way ahead of its time. Now - over a quarter of a century later - thanks to the arrival of the multichannel Super Audio CD (SACD), there is finally a system available which permits these precious recordings to be released in the quality they deserved back then. This release is an outstanding version of Scott Joplin's opera Treemonisha. Not only because this recording - which was orchestrated by the American composer and jazz musician, Gunther Schuller, in 1975 for the Houston Grand Opera - probably comes the closest to Joplin's original intention, but also because the recording's crisp and bright sound can now be cherished on 2 SACDs, complete with a full libretto in English.Joplin's uniquely beautiful and dearly inspiring score is a buoyant blend of ragtime, vaudeville and grand opera, with lots of dancing, a big portion for the chorus, and arias and ensembles of stunning beauty. The composition has an inherently American tone and it was definitely created by a true entertainer. It is 'a landmark set', as Christopher Cook put it in a review in BBC Music Magazine (August 2005).

The seeds had already been planted in the early 1970s when Deutsche Grammophon realised what amazing results could be achieved by recording on multi-channel tapes, using either four or eight channels. But it was not meant to be, as imperfections in the playback equipment at the time made it impossible for musical connoisseurs to enjoy these recordings in the way the artists, producers and engineers who created them intended - the new recording technology was clearly way ahead of its time. Now with the advent of the Super Audio CD, there is finally a system that makes it possible to release these magnificent recordings in the quality they deserve. There is finally a system that enables these magnificent flowers to come into full bloom.

The latest flower to unfurl its petals is this SACD of Joseph Haydn's Violin Concerto No. 1 in C major and his Sinfonia Concertante in B flat major. The pieces are performed by one of the 20th century's leading violinists, Pinchas Zukerman, former Principal Cellist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Ronald Leonhard, oboist Barbara Winters and bassoonist David Breidenthal, together with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. These are outstanding performances of often neglected repertoire by the great Classical master, finally realised in the finest sound quality.

The juxtaposition of conventional passage work and contrapuntal episodes in the piano emphasises the sketchy, as yet unperformed character of the work. As is often the case in the vocal compositions of distinguished American composer Gordon Getty, many of the pieces collected in The Little Match Girl are based on, or inspired by, poetry from the nineteenth and earlytwentieth centuries. This SACD starts with "A prayer for my daughter" for chorus and orchestra, based on the poem by William Butler Yeats which is, according to Getty, "...one of the most admired works by one of the most admired poets of the age". It is followed by "Poor Peter" for tenor, chorus and orchestra, with lyrics by Getty himself inspired by Poe and again Yeats. Then follows the titular "The little match girl"; the heartbreaking fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, put to music more or less word-for-word in a challenging setting for the orchestra and particularly the chorus. The disc concludes with "Joan and the bells", Getty's own narrative of the trial of Joan of Arc, about which he said, "It was the genius of Shaw that inverted this safe literary tradition and brought out the spunky teenager in Joan. Jean Anouilh went farther, in The Lark, and gave her the simplicity of preadolescence. Joan and the Bells owes much to these masters, particularly Anouilh, and takes the same poetic license. It is a tale of a child's faith in an age without childhood, of a valour undeflected, and of the redemption these qualities commend."

The disc comes with a booklet containing the complete lyrics to all the pieces as well as personal comments about the music by the composer himself, which enriches the listening experience.

This recording by the Münchner Rundfunkorchester and the Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks was conducted by Asher Fisch and Ulf Schirmer respectively. It features magnificent soloists such as tenor Nikolai Schukoff ("Poor Peter"),soprano Melody Moore ("Joan and the Bells") and baritone Lester Lynch ("Joan and the Bells").

Russian National Orchestra / Mikhail Pletnev

Back in 1990, highly respected both nationally and internationally, Russian pianist and conductor Mikhail Pletnev formed the first independent orchestra in the history of his country, the Russian National Orchestra. Many of Russia’s finest musicians joined him in the launch of this ensemble, which achieved a towering stature among the world’s orchestras within a short period and which Pletnev continues to serve as Artistic Director and Principal Conductor. Twenty-five years ago, the first recording the RNO ever made was of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6, the Pathétique. This album combines Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Coronation March (1883), Capriccio Italien , Op. 45, Francesca da Rimini, Op. 32, Romeo and Juliet (1880) and Marche Slave, Op. 31. It completes the Tchaikovsky cycle including the integral symphonies and the Manfred Symphony, the RNO recorded for PENTATONE between 2011 and 2014, under the baton of its artistic director Mikhail Pletnev.

At the occasion of the orchestra’s 25th anniversary in 2015, the cycle was re-released as a 7-SACD box-set. With a musical content varying from virtuoso fireworks to ravishing lyricism, one could say this disc is a true coronation of the first 25 years of this magnificent orchestra.

Orbit, a three-disc compilation of music for solo cello, all composed between 1945 and 2014 and performed by world renowned cellist Matt Haimovitz, is the second release in the PENTATONE OXINGALE SERIES. In this series PENATONE joins forces with Grammy Award-winning OXINGALE RECORDS, a trailblazing artist's label since 2000 which is equally committed to revelatory interpretations of the canonic repertoire as to riveting performances of works by recent and living composers.

Alongside his earlier 3-disc compilation on Deutche Grammophon, Orbit establishes Matt Haimovitz as one of the most prolific exponents of solo cello music in our time.

The album documents Matt Haimovitz's musical journey since the turn of the millennium, together with his partner in life and music, composer Luna Pearl Woolf. It contains nearly all of the solo contemporary works that were initially released on OXINGALE RECORDS as five thematic albums Anthem (2003), Goulash! (2005), After Reading Shakespeare (2007), Figment (2009) and Matteo (2011), as well as two newly recorded tracks: Philip Glass's "Orbit" and a new arrangement by Luna Pearl Woolf of the Beatles' "Helter Skelter". More than twenty composers are represented in this set, fifteen of them still living, and ten works are recorded for the very first time.

This impressive solo cello odyssey offers the listener a fascinating kaleidoscope of musical influences from the past sixty years, encountering a variety of composers who range in musical style from vanguards Elliott Carter and Philip Glass to young, rock 'n roll-influenced American composers, to the Italian avant-garde of Luciano Berio and Salvatore Sciarrino: a true 20th century Tower of Babel.

The fifth album to be released in the PENTATONE Oxingale series since PENTATONE and Oxingale Records joined forces in February 2015 combines two great masterpieces of Franz Schubert - the Sonata for Arpeggione and Piano in A minor, D. 821 and the String Quintet in C Major, D956.

Schubert wrote the sonata D. 821 for the arpeggione, a six stringed instrument similar to the viola da gamba, invented in 1723 and falling into oblivion not much more than a decade later. With the Arpeggione no longer around the sonata is usually played on the cello or viola. In this 2001 performance Grammy-nominated cellist Matt Haimovitz is joined by renowned pianist and chamber musician Itamar Golan. Finished only a few months before his untimely death in November 1828, Schubert’s String Quintet in C major, set for the rather unusual combination of string quartet plus a second cello, received its first public performance in 1850 and was published only in 1853. Nowadays generally considered to be one of the greatest masterpieces in the chamber music repertoire, it is hard to imagine that the Quintet remained unheard for such a long time.

On this album it can be heard in a 2003 performance by Matt Haimovitz and the Miró Quartet.

Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra / Marc Albrecht

Composer Arnold Schönberg considered it vitally important to study the techniques of other composers in order to thus penetrate more deeply into the true content of their music and he believed the best way to do this was by arranging the original compositions. And thus between May and September 1937, Schönberg penned an orchestral version of the Piano Quartet in G minor by Johannes Brahms. His first reason was personal: "I like the piece." But the other two were more of a practical nature. "It is seldom played. It is always very badly played, because the better the pianist, the louder he plays, and you hear nothing from the strings. I wanted for once to hear everything, and this I have achieved."

In this regard, conductor Marc Albrecht and Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra prevail, with individual instruments and sections coming forward in carefully drawn sections. It is a fun Quartet, and one that is brilliantly played by Albrecht and the orchestra. Furthermore, Albrecht's style suits the composition, with its grand, impressive gestures and vivid colour to the music. When asked why he is so enthusiastic about the composition Marc Albrecht replies, "Schönberg's contributions made it a true orchestral work: American with a Schönberg-like sound. It is a fantastic trip through an insanely good piece."

Recorded at the orchestra's impressive residence the NedPhO-Koepel, formerly the Majella church this album also features Schönberg's own work, Begleitmusik zu einer Lichtspielscene (which translates as 'Accompaniment to a cinematic scene'). Although the work reflected the customs of silent movies, Schönberg's original score could not be used for film as it was not possible to adapt the music to the length of the scenes. The première was held in Frankfurt in 1930, without an accompanying film, and led by conductor Hans Rosbaud. Schönberg's idea was not fulfilled until 1973, when three films by Jean-Marie Straub, Jan W. Morthenson and Luc Ferrari respectively were made to accompany the score.

Image Overtures
Prague Philharmonia / Jakub Hrusa

For a large part, thanks to the effort of Johannes Brahms, who introduced him to his publisher Simrock, Czech composer Antonín Dvorák developed into a composer with an international reputation. Don't we all know his Slavonic Dances, his Symphonies or his chamber music, such as the Dumky Trio or the American string quartet? This album reveals some of the more hidden treasures of Dvorák's repertoire, namely his overtures, of which he wrote no less than thirteen. In the booklet to the album they are described as follows: All five overtures on this recording are richly and vividly scored, employing palettes of instruments broader on average than those found in Dvorák's mature symphonies and sometimes calling for special effects. For their orchestral colour but also their rich expression of poetic content, as well as their purely musical invention and structural mastery, these overtures constitute gems of special brilliance in the treasury of Dvorák's compositional bequest. The PKF - Prague Philharmonia recorded this album in January 2015 at the Forum Karlin in Prague under the baton of their 2009-2015 Music Director and Chief Conductor Jakub Hrusa.

Image Aber der Richtige...: Violin Concerto & Miniatures
This album is violinist Arabella Steinbacher’s tribute to the favourite composer of her family household. The music of Richard Strauss has played a crucial role throughout her life. As great Strauss lovers, her parents named her after the main character of Strauss’ opera Arabella, and the family house was filled with Strauss melodies, often sung live by famous singers accompanied by Steinbacher’s father, who was a solo-repetiteur at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. The album starts with a piece that Strauss originally conceived for violin and orchestra, the rarely-performed Violin Concerto in D minor, composed when he was still a teenager. Two other early instrumental works – the Romanze (usually performed by cello and orchestra) and Scherzino (an arrangement of an early piano piece) – are also featured on this album. The rest of the repertoire consists of famous Strauss songs (Zueignung, Wiegenlied, Traum durch die Dammerung, Cacilie), “sung” on Steinbacher’s violin. The apotheosis of this highly personal programme is Steinbacher’s rendition of “Aber der Richtige…”, the celestial duet from Arabella. Arabella Steinbacher, a multiple award-winner with an extensive PENTATONE discography, is accompanied by the WDR Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Lawrence Foster.

Given his magnificent achievement in the field of art song, and the vast volume and consistently high quality of his Lieder oeuvre, it is not surprising that Schubert's songs have been recorded numerous times. It is not surprising either that many composers, such as Franz Liszt, Johannes Brahms, Benjamin Britten, Hector Berlioz, Max Reger and Anton Webern made arrangements of Schubert's songs. What is surprising, however, is the fact that these arrangements -made by some of the greatest composers in musical history-are so seldom heard either in concert or on record.

With the release of this album, hopefully that situation will change. It combines 17 Schubert compositions, of which 13 were orchestrated by late-romantic German composer Reger Max, and four by a member of the Second Viennese School, Anton Webern. When listening to these songs, the listener will discover that these arrangements are made with such craftsmanship that they themselves became unparalleled works of art.

The performers on this SACD are the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin and German tenor Christian Elsner, conducted by Maestro Marek Janowski. The album's accompanying booklet contains the lyrics to the songs both in German and English, as well as programme notes and artists' biographies.

Image Prologue
The prologue is a unique feature of early baroque opera: an opening scene where an allegorical figure enters the stage to prepare the audience for the musical drama to come. Thus Prologue is the musical introduction of Italian star soprano Francesca Aspromonte and her exclusive, long term engagement with Pentatone, promising great joy as well as drama in the years to come. Prologue is a highly original album consisting of several prologues from early-baroque operas by Monteverdi, Caccini, Cavalli, Landi, Rossi, Cesti, Stradella and Scarlatti. Strung together, they form a representation in a single act, a theatre full of small, complete dramas: the opera before the opera. Francesca Aspromonte is quickly establishing herself as a shining star in the Baroque firmament. She has curated this album together with musical director Enrico Onofri, who leads il pomo d’oro, one of the most important and successful period ensembles of today.

What a treat! Two of the most magnificent chamber music compositions ever written - the Schubert String Quintet in C major and the Schumann Piano Quintet in E major - combined on to one SACD.

It is not known when exactly Schubert wrote his string quintet. He mentions the composition in a letter to his publisher dated less than seven weeks prior to his untimely death. This is the only clue as to the work's period of composition. Therefore, it can be safely assumed that it is one of the last works he ever composed. One may also assume he himself never heard it being performed: almost unimaginable, if one really thinks about it.

After a legal battle with his piano teacher Friedrich Wieck, father to his beloved Clara Wieck, Robert Schumann and Clara finally gained the right to marry on 12 September 1840. The first years of their marriage were the happiest of Schumann's life, which translated to an outburst of musical creativity. While until then Schumann wrote almost exclusively for piano solo, he then started to widen his scope. Schumann wrote a large number of masterpieces within a period of just four to five years, varying from his famous song cycles (Liederkreis Op. 39, Frauenliebe und -leben and Dichterliebe) to his first symphony, a piano concerto and string quartets to the piano quintet which was written for his young bride. Unlike Schubert and his string quintet, Schumann must have heard his piano quintet often during his lifetime, as Clara, delighted with the masterpiece dedicated to her, performed it regularly to the public.

How fortunate that, with modern technology, the most subtle of nuances in a performance can be successfully captured in a recording. The music of the great French master Debussy - who revolutionised and pushed the boundaries of tonal harmony, as well as discovered new sound and expressive possibilities for musical instruments - is reproduced in this high resolution quality recording like never before.

The three chamber music works represented here were all written in the last three years of Debussy's life and are a fusion of the styles he used to adopt throughout his composing career. The cavalier and Moorish flavour of the Cello-Piano Sonata, the subtly seductive Violin Piano Sonata and the beautifully transparent Sonata for Flute, Viola and Harp are masterfully performed by members of the legendary Boston Symphony Orchestra, with the great Michael Tilson Thomas at the piano. As an added bonus, we have the mystical Syrinx for solo flute which completes this beautiful album.

Image On My Journey Now - Spirituals & Hymns
ABOUT Life affirming, defiant and uplifting, there is nothing quite like the extraordinary power and simplicity of American Spirituals to move and inspire, abundantly demonstrated here by the acclaimed American operatic baritone Lester Lynch in this new release from PENTATONE of familiar and well-loved spirituals and hymns. Conceived under conditions of tremendous hardship, these emotionally charged songs speak of the indomitable human will to live and to triumph over despair against the odds. Defiant and jubilant, they communicate the unquenchable longing for freedom and salvation. “I have dreamed of recording this album from the inception of my career,” writes Lester Lynch in the accompanying album notes. “To realize that dream at this particular moment in time, to record these songs of freedom … echoes the spiritual tradition and revolutionary act of those who raised their voices in song against brutality and inequality.” Lester Lynch personally chose and arranged the songs in this release, each with a particular accompaniment—piano, organ, acoustic guitar, violin, trumpet, harmonica, drum, and djembe (a West African goblet drum). From the rhythmic By An’ By and Ev’ry Time I Feel De Spirit, to the richly melodic Amazing Grace and Deep River, the 24 songs constantly astonish and delight for their range and depth and their unfailing power to move. “Music speaks to and heals the human spirit,” writes Lynch. “These songs have had a profound effect on American history. I sing them to honor those who struggled (and died) for freedom, and it is my hope that they will spark the light of freedom anew for every listener.” Lester Lynch is joined on this recording by Victor Simonson (pianist and arranger), Brian Farrell (keyboards and arranger) and the ART Singers and Oakland School of the Arts Ensemble (Choral Director, Alexander Taite).

Image Mörike Lieder
Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, baritone
Sviatoslav Richter, piano

This album contains 18 of the 53 Mörike Lieder by Hugo Wolf, performed by legendary artists Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Sviatoslav Richter. The Gedichte von Eduard Mörike is one of the five major song cycles that brought great recognition to the nineteenth-century composer, Hugo Wolf. The 18 songs included in this recording rank amongst the composer's most outstanding works. Despite Wolf's own regret of being recognised as a great lied composer, he developed the Lieder genre to its highest level. The undeniable influence of Wagner and, to some extent the "Second Viennese School", is self-evident in Wolf's music. By pushing the boundaries of tonality and dramatic effect, Wolf was able to achieve an unprecedented level of tension in the Lieder genre.

The epic collaboration between Fischer-Dieskau and Richter began in 1965 at the Aldeburgh Festival. Their great mutual respect has been well documented. Nonetheless, during their collaboration Sviatoslav Richter and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau only recorded works by three different composers: Schubert, Brahms and Wolf. It was about recording Wolf that Richter said: "On this occasion it seems as though we really entered into the spirit of these songs; we'd rehearsed sufficiently and felt not only confidence, but real friendship towards each other." According to Richter, their collaboration with Hugo Wolf's Lieder was the most creative and satisfying. These legendary artists bring their uncompromising attention to detail and unity of vision to produce musicmaking of great power and beauty. This re-release of the 1973 Deutsche Gramophone recording of the Mörike Lieder allows us to experience the work of these 20th century musical giants in an unprecedented way and to enjoy the Mörike Lieder like never before.

Image Symphonies Nos. 1 & 6
On his first album released on PENTATONE, multiple prizewinning conductor René Jacobs finally records Schubert, his first great musical love. Jacobs delivers his fresh perspective on the favourite composer of his youth together with the exceptional players of the B’Rock Orchestra, acclaimed for their inspired playing, musical curiosity and original approach to the classics.

The album contains Schubert’s First and Sixth symphonies, written when he was still a teenager. With this recording, Jacobs and the B’Rock Orchestra lift out the maturity and depth of these two early works. Whereas the First has a more classical, bubbly quality, the Sixth shows Schubert’s inclination to musical Romanticism. At the same time, these symphonies have much in common: both display humour and joie de vivre, with “carnivalesque” allusions to early nineteenth-century Italian opera, but behind the happy façade lies a deeper layer, full of melancholy and bitterness. In that respect, these works fully capture Schubert’s personal life: that of a social, lively man, plagued by the knowledge of his fatal illness. They are performed on period instruments, transparent, but full of fire.

Image Divertimento & Preludes to Bach
Mozart’s brilliance at the keyboard is well known, but it was his joy in playing the viola – and the musical dialogue and kinship of playing with friends – that led the composer to write his music for string trio. This album features Mozart’s Divertimento in E-flat major, as well as his string trio arrangements of three fugues from Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier. In the three additional preludes to his Bach arrangements, Mozart reached an impressive symbiosis between Bach’s musical language and his own style. Jonathan Crow, Douglas McNabney and Matt Haimovitz catch the singular spirit of Mozart’s take on Bach and offer one of the most animated interpretations of Mozart’s Divertimento. Previously released in the US alone as Mozart the Mason on Oxingale, this 2006 recording will now be released worldwide and digitally for the first time as part of the PENTATONE OXINGALE SERIES.
