First performed as a cycle of four operas in 1876, Wagner's visionary Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung) is one of the greatest works of art. Centred around a ring which offers its bearer ultimate power and the attempts of various people to acquire it, the Ring cycle explores the relationship between love and earthly power and the themes of yearning and loss, all within a setting of medieval legend. The Prologue Das Rheingold depicts the theft and subsequent surrender of the ring forged from the Rhinemaidens' gold by the Nibelung dwarf Alberich.

Götterdämmerung brings to a conclusion the Naxos Ring Cycle conducted by Jaap van Zweden with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. As with the other releases in this edition, it will appear both on standard CD and Blu-ray formats. Previous releases in this cycle have been received with great critical acclaim. "The quality of the orchestral playing is remarkable… The cast is uniformly strong, and the audio quality is superb." (ClassicalCDReview.com on Das Rheingold): "Van Zweden seems to respond more naturally to this richer, more passionate score, better suited to his sweeping approach. Drawing airy, luminescent textures from the Hong Kong players, he drives the drama excitingly…" (BBC Music Magazine on Die Walküre). Götterdämmerung (Twilight of the Gods) is the epic fourth and final opera of Wagner's great Ring cycle, with a plot that depicts the fall of heroes, gods, and the entire world. Containing all of the Ring's essential elements, Götterdämmerung possesses a profoundly satisfying sense of inevitability that makes it both a towering climax and a unified summation of the Ring's abundant variety.

Ding Shande started writing the Long March Symphony in 1959, and completed the work in 1962, when it was first performed in Shanghai. The composer himself visited the route of the great march and spoke with soldiers who had taken part in it. The event celebrated took place in the years 1934 and 1935, when the Red Army, some 300,000 strong, broke through the Nationalist blockade, and, with great heroism, marched North, from Hunan and Kiangsi to Shensi, just South of the Great Wall, surmounting incredible hardships on the way. 20,000 reached their destination.

A world-renowned composer, Du Mingxin has a great influence on Chinese modern music. In 1982 his first violin concerto, written for Japanese violinist Takako Nishizaki, was given its first performance in Hong Kong, followed by further performances in China and abroad, where it aroused considerable interest at a time when the work of Chinese composers was little known in other countries. More of his notable works are ballets The Mermaid and The Red Detachment of Women (co-composed with other Chinese composers), his Piano Concerto No. 1 "Spirit of Spring", which won the first prize of the 8th National Symphony Competition, and the "Great Wall" Symphony.

Du Mingxin's Violin Concerto is unusual in the context of contemporary Chinese music in that it has no declared programme, follows no particular narrative and claims to evoke no particular landscape or situation. It is a work that imposes great technical demands on the performer, makes particular use of Takako Nishizaki's lyrical gifts as a player, while exploiting to the full her command of violin technique. The Piano Concerto No. 1 "Spirit of Spring" was written in 1988 and received its first performance at the concert given in Hong Kong to celebrate the composer's sixtieth birthday. The soloist on that occasion, as on the present recording, was the Hungarian pianist Jeno Jandó.

Prior to the Chinese language becoming an official language in 1974, Chinese operas, later Mandarin pop songs and English pop songs dominated the music market in Hong Kong.

In the 70s, with the rise of television, TV drama series became very popular. After the huge success of the first Cantonese TV theme song The Wedding with Cries and Laughs sung by Sandra Lang written by Joseph Koo with lyrics by Yip Siu Dak, it became a trend to attach each of them with a theme song sung in Cantonese. Most of them ended up topping the local charts. This trend also extended to Chinese movies.

This recording features the theme songs of the most popular TV dramas and Chinese movies in Hong Kong in the 70s and early 80s.

The 1940s were probably the most tumultuous decade in Shanghai's history. The cosmopolitan Far Eastern metropolis started the decade under foreign control, divided between the areas occupied by the Japanese at the start of the Sino-Japanese War in 1937, and the International Settlement and French Concession districts which remained bits of Paris and London on Chinese soil. Thus, the "Hollywood of the East", as Shanghai was dubbed due to its flourishing movie and recording industries, was fertile ground for cross cultural exchanges, and not surprisingly there is a strong Western influence in the Chinese popular songs of this era. The trends prevalent in America, particularly swing and Latin, are picked up in the city's music, and while there are still some echoes of traditional folk melodies, the interpretation of these tunes more often than not eschews Chinese instruments for jazzy orchestrations. After all, it was Hollywood imports which dominated the Shanghai box office, with musicals a definite favourite with Chinese audiences. Chinese studios also produced their share of musicals - virtually every film, whether drama, comedy or tragedy, had at least one song, and most hit records of the decade were introduced in the movies.

In December 1941, the Japanese entered the foreign concessions and new American records and movies ceased to be imported to Shanghai. Despite the hardships of war, this proved a unique opportunity to Chinese musicians and filmmakers who were no longer saddled with American competition. After the Japanese were defeated in August 1945, the Shanghai film industry was in a shambles and it was over a year before movies were produced there again. In the meantime, a large contingent of Shanghai directors and stars went to Hong Kong where Mandarin-dialogue movies resumed production at the end of 1945. Once again, virtually every movie had at least one song, but the music was still recorded in Shanghai where musicians and technical facilities remained superior to Hong Kong.

The taking over of Shanghai by the communists in May 1949, and the new regime's antipathy towards Western-influenced popular songs, was soon to put an end to the musical trends prevalent in movie music of the 1940s and to start a new chapter in Chinese movie themes.

This celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology features an exciting range of music, from the string orchestra version of Schönberg’s Verklärte Nacht to a sequence of invigorating contemporary scores. They provide a perfect opportunity to showcase the individual and collective talents of the distinguished principals of the Hong Kong Philharmonic orchestra. Toshiro Mayuzumi was one of Japan’s foremost 20th-century composers, enjoying a distinguished international reputation on a par with that of Toru Takemitsu. His enthusiasm for avant-garde Western music led him to study in Paris. The Phonologie Symphonique is a synthesis of Var?se-like acoustical experiment and serial techniques. The jazz-tinted Bacchanale is Mayuzumi's attempy to produce ‘a cosmos of sounds reflecting the vital energies of the origin of music’, and the symphonic poem Samsara is a musical expression of Buddhist teaching. Tan Dun, conductor

The multifaceted and multi-award winner Tan Dun has made an indelible mark on the world music scene with a creative repertoire that spans the boundaries of classical music. The Symphonic Poem on Three Notes describes an evolutionary arc from nature through industry and back to nature, the traditional orchestra augmented with a range of unorthodox sound sources such as wind, stones and car brake drums. The drama of Orchestral Theatre centres on memories of ritual from the composer's childhood, linking folk music styles to Western atonality, while the Concerto for Orchestra describes the exoticism of Marco Polo's geographical, musical and spiritual journeys.
