Image Piano Sonatas
For Zig-Zag Territoires, Yury Martynov has undertaken the complete Beethoven symphonies in Liszts transcriptions on historic instruments. The third volume of that cycle came out in January 2014 and, like the previous instalments, has enjoyed great critical success. This new release bears witness to another aspect of Yury Martynovs talent and art, this time grappling with a composer from the avant-garde of the first half of the 20th century, and on a resolutely modern Steinway. On the programme: works from the pre-war years (Sonata No.5, Pensées), as well as a war work (Sonata No. 6) and the marvellous 12 pieces that make up the Music for Children, with which apprentice pianists are well familiar. This is therefore a recording that explores two registers quite present in Prokofievs work: rich, powerful writing contrasting with melodic, poetic writing.

Alexei Lubimov is a very great pianist and an authentically eclectic musician. Close to the music of today he has played and recorded works by many contemporary composers and founded the Alternativa festival in Moscow, he is also impassioned by early instruments and Baroque music, as well as by all the music in between. This new recording stages the encounter of music of the Second Vienna School with that of the American Charles Ives. And this time, Alexei Lubimov has chosen to play on a modern instrument.

Jeanne, beautiful widow, declares to Charles a new marriage with a doctor and asks Charles to move out of her house with his dog. She was her mistress at the death of her husband, Charles's best friend. Leïla young house employee is pregnant but does not know of which father, can only give Charles her tenderness and a beatutiful smile. With a small pension, Charles has no other issue than wandering in the streets. When he and his dog face the railway and a train, this train announces their end of a new start? This movie put forward Jean-Paul Belmondo as he did play until 2001, time when he was attacked by a brain struck. This a double challenge; his health and a more tragic role presenting Jean-Paul Belmondo as a bum - situation extremely accurate today - trying not to lose his dignity and his life. MUSIC PLAYS A VERY ACTIV ROLE Francis Huster, the director wanted a music coming from the heart, "which emerges from its bowel, at the heart of the invisible, in the depths of the soul". Philippe Rombi proposes a moving music; in a classical style (orchestra, piano...) which underlines the dialogues, plays on our deepest emotions and takes us in the great adventure of life which tells us Belmondo.

Image 4CD-BOX: Tango
This set is a journey to the heart of the Tango and also the occasion to be convinced, if need be, of the importance of this music and of the full singularity of a language that crosses styles and strikes a profound chord in us. In fact, this set constitutes a quadruple portrait of the Tango, bringing together four recordings from the Outhere Music catalogue, made by four different ensembles: the Caliente Quartet, the Ensemble Contraste, the Ensemble Astoria and the duo formed by cellist François Salque and accordionist Vincent Peirani. This low-priced set also traces the evolution of this language, from Piazzolla to Beytelmann, including the byways taken by the Salque Peirani duo. A whole history... and quite a story!

Jörg-Andreas Bötticher, harpsichord

To mark her return to the recording studio after CDs of Tartini and Albinoni (both awarded a Diapason d'Or), Chiara Banchini joins forces with Jörg Andreas Bötticher to present her version of Johann Sebastian Bach's sonatas for obbligato harpsichord and violin BWV 1014-1019.

This interpretation is notable, among other features, for the use of a German harpsichord with the disposition 16', 8', 8', 4', freely reconstructed by Matthias Kramer (Hamburg, 2006) after Christian Zell.

Image Nisi Dominus / Salve
Rosenmüller, a prodigiously talented German musician and composer, found himself imprisoned in Leipzig for obscure ‘sex offences’: had his presence there become embarrassing? But he managed to escape to Hamburg, then reached the free and ‘Most Serene’ Republic of Venice, where he eventually taught at the Ospedale della Pietà, long before Vivaldi.

Amandine Beyer and Gli Incogniti have discovered these unpublished vocal pieces in which majestic, quasi-operatic sinfonias introduce psalms or other liturgical texts, with voices and instruments answering each other colla parte – as if the composer wanted each musician or singer to transcend his or her own limits.

The voice can also sometimes flare up like a flame, an existential interrogation.
‘The “Beatus vir” of the Nisi Dominus is a perfect example of this, with its vocal line which enters so gently that it seems like a tentative question – “Beatus vir?” Is the man blessed? – and is transformed into a whirlwind of sensations, in an almost desperate cry that remains unanswered’ (Amandine Beyer).
Amandine Beyer has just been appointed a Professor at the Schola Cantorum in Basel in succession to Chiara Banchini.

Image The Seven Last Words of Christ on the cross
Alexeï Lubimov chooses the repertoires he plays and records with the freedom of the inspired musician that he is. This time, the intention came from his encountering the sonority of a particular piano, a Tangentenflügel, i.e. a tangent piano that in France was sometimes called a 'harmonious, heavenly harpsichord'. And it is the singular sonority of this instrument that made him want to record this keyboard transcription of Haydn's Seven Last Words of Christ on the cross.

Musical love at first sight, that is a good description of the meeting of Jos van Immerseel and Lisa Shklyaver. With her sweet tone and fine articulation, the young clarinettist effortlessly won the pianist over.No matter which repertoire they played, it clicked immediately. The desire to come as close as possible to the sound aesthetic of composers at the time of the first performance of their works, along with the simple pleasure of the sound of period instruments, guide Jos van Immerseel in his approach. For this recording, offering a panorama of French music for clarinet and piano from the early 20th century, Jos van Immerseel has chosen a Bechstein piano of 1870,and Lisa Schklyaver,a Dolnet Lefevre & Pigis clarinet from 1930.The recording is doubly precious in that it proposes both the view of one of the finest performers of French music on a variety of remarkable works as well as, in a way, the sonority and poetry of an era.2015 marks Jos van Immerseel's 70th birthday, one of Belgium s most acclaimed musicians.Later in 2015 Jos van Immerseel and Anima Eterna will record and release an album of Janacek and Dvorak.

This recording is the first to be made by Trio Dali with its new violinist, Jack Liebeck. After a Ravel programme in 2009, then a Schubert disc, the Trio turns its talents to the two Mendelssohn trios and transcriptions of Bach.

The Trio Dali has thus chosen to contrast Mendelssohn's two trios with works by a composer for whose rediscovery Mendelssohn was largely responsible in his time: Johann Sebastian Bach. Thus, the Trio Dali proposes a recording that is a sort mirroring of Mendelssohn and Bach.

The Zig-Zag Territoires label, like the Outhere Music group of which it is a part, is particularly attentive to the emergence and support of new talents, of which this CD, the first by the young pianist Andrew Tyson, is a good illustration. But it is also much more than that for it bears witness to the interpretation, already enlightening, of a very great talent and to the birth, on disc, of a singular, poetic voice.Andrew Tyson has chosen to record the cycle of Chopins 24 Preludes, which represent so many different worlds to explore and bring to life. He excels therein thanks to the fantastic variety of timbres that he manages to make blossom on the piano of the Teldex studio in Berlin, and also to an extraordinary contrapuntal capacity.

Heinz Holliger

First collaboration of Zig-Zag Territoires with the great conductor, composer and oboist Heinz Holliger, and with the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, this disc brings together pivotal works of the two Viennese composers, works written prior to abandoning tonality and still strongly linked to what went before but already offering glimpses of what the atonal adventure would be.

Heinz Holliger is a very great master for whom many composers have written. Also boasting a rich catalogue as a composer, he has played and conducted all over the world.

With this very fine disc, he gives us particularly moving, committed interpretations of works that are sometimes enclosed in useless carapaces, backed up in that by a Lausanne Chamber Orchestra at the top of its form.

Yury Martynov, piano

Transcription, for Franz Liszt, was in equal measure a means of celebrating the genius of Beethoven and of meditating on his works. It was also a way of provoking a well-nigh titanic confrontation between the resources of the pianist and his instrument and the immense potential of the orchestra. Thus the power of the interpreter's conception, his understanding of the essence of the work, become the crucial factor in Liszt's approach and in the adventure offered to the listener. For the third volume of his complete set of Liszt's transcriptions of the Beethoven symphonies, Yury Martynov has chosen a piano of 1867 made by Blüthner, whose instruments were much admired by Liszt.

Emmanuel Krivine

For this second collaboration between the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra, Emmanuel Krivine and Zig-Zag Territoires, two major Russian works were chosen. Both make the orchestra sound sumptuous with, for the first, the complicity of that fantastic colourist and orchestrator Maurice Ravel, and for the second, the skill of a composer nicknamed 'the magician of the orchestra'.

Emmanuel Krivine excels in these works, which demand much of all the musicians and necessitate as much commitment as perspicacity from the conductor, at the service of scores magnifying the fantastic musical instrument that is the modern symphony orchestra.

GRAMOPHONE EDITOR'S CHOICE

This monumental work of French Romanticism is one of the essential landmarks in the career of any conductor. The quality of Berlioz's orchestration and questions of timbre and the ideal instrumental forces lie at the core of the approach of Jos van Immerseel and Anima Eterna Brugge, who are increasingly drawn to French composers and especially to their precise, shimmering orchestral textures. Surprisingly enough, it was the influence of the master orchestrator Rimsky-Korsakov on Ravel that made Jos van Immerseel want to tackle such pieces as Bolero and La Valse in a recording singled out by the press in 2006 for its hypnotic power and the quality of the timbres and phrasing. Berlioz follows in this same line in 2010, with Poulenc planned for 2011 and Debussy for 2012. It should be remembered that Jos van Immerseel was taught in Antwerp by Eugène Traye, himself a pupil of Robert Casadesus and chamber music partner of Jean Laurent and Arthur Grumiaux, in a highly Francophile musical tradition. Over long months of preparation, the musicians steeped themselves in Berlioz's music, his Treatise on instrumentation and his Memoirs, and gradually formed an image of the construction of this masterpiece in which poetry, imagination, lyricism, rhythmic invention and evocative power form the basis of a purely Romantic language of great subtlety. The choice of period instruments (double basses from the period just after the instrument was modernised, French 'omnitonic' clarinets by Müller, 'ordinary' flutes from before the invention of the Boehm system, valved horns with crooks to avoid transposition, an ophicleide, an Érard harp, timpani with a central screw played with the sticks specifically called for by Berlioz, two Érard pianos to provide low harmonics in imitation of bells in the Dies irae of the Songe d'une nuit de sabbat), familiarity with Berlioz's Treatise on instrumentation and Pierre Baillot's L'Art de jouer du violon (notably with respect to vibrato), and respect for the composer's dynamics constitute the principal bases for the sound world of this interpretation, which is at once refined in its Classical style and haunted by the pungent timbres of the brass and of those diabolical clarinets, abyssal bells, and rattling death-march timpani. 'The result may be regarded as surprising and unexpected. Every moment of the performance testifies to the musical and technical mastery of the interpreters and their understanding of the grammar of this music, but also reflects their passion for and fascination with it.'
