Image Piano Sonatas
For Zig-Zag Territoires, Yury Martynov has undertaken the complete Beethoven symphonies in Liszts transcriptions on historic instruments. The third volume of that cycle came out in January 2014 and, like the previous instalments, has enjoyed great critical success. This new release bears witness to another aspect of Yury Martynovs talent and art, this time grappling with a composer from the avant-garde of the first half of the 20th century, and on a resolutely modern Steinway. On the programme: works from the pre-war years (Sonata No.5, Pensées), as well as a war work (Sonata No. 6) and the marvellous 12 pieces that make up the Music for Children, with which apprentice pianists are well familiar. This is therefore a recording that explores two registers quite present in Prokofievs work: rich, powerful writing contrasting with melodic, poetic writing.

Alexei Lubimov is a very great pianist and an authentically eclectic musician. Close to the music of today he has played and recorded works by many contemporary composers and founded the Alternativa festival in Moscow, he is also impassioned by early instruments and Baroque music, as well as by all the music in between. This new recording stages the encounter of music of the Second Vienna School with that of the American Charles Ives. And this time, Alexei Lubimov has chosen to play on a modern instrument.

This set is a journey to the heart of the Tango and also the occasion to be convinced, if need be, of the importance of this music and of the full singularity of a language that crosses styles and strikes a profound chord in us. In fact, this set constitutes a quadruple portrait of the Tango, bringing together four recordings from the Outhere Music catalogue, made by four different ensembles: the Caliente Quartet, the Ensemble Contraste, the Ensemble Astoria and the duo formed by cellist François Salque and accordionist Vincent Peirani. This low-priced set also traces the evolution of this language, from Piazzolla to Beytelmann, including the byways taken by the Salque Peirani duo. A whole history... and quite a story!

Image Nisi Dominus / Salve
Rosenmüller, a prodigiously talented German musician and composer, found himself imprisoned in Leipzig for obscure ‘sex offences’: had his presence there become embarrassing? But he managed to escape to Hamburg, then reached the free and ‘Most Serene’ Republic of Venice, where he eventually taught at the Ospedale della Pietà, long before Vivaldi.

Amandine Beyer and Gli Incogniti have discovered these unpublished vocal pieces in which majestic, quasi-operatic sinfonias introduce psalms or other liturgical texts, with voices and instruments answering each other colla parte – as if the composer wanted each musician or singer to transcend his or her own limits.

The voice can also sometimes flare up like a flame, an existential interrogation.
‘The “Beatus vir” of the Nisi Dominus is a perfect example of this, with its vocal line which enters so gently that it seems like a tentative question – “Beatus vir?” Is the man blessed? – and is transformed into a whirlwind of sensations, in an almost desperate cry that remains unanswered’ (Amandine Beyer).
Amandine Beyer has just been appointed a Professor at the Schola Cantorum in Basel in succession to Chiara Banchini.

Image The Seven Last Words of Christ on the cross
Alexeï Lubimov chooses the repertoires he plays and records with the freedom of the inspired musician that he is. This time, the intention came from his encountering the sonority of a particular piano, a Tangentenflügel, i.e. a tangent piano that in France was sometimes called a 'harmonious, heavenly harpsichord'. And it is the singular sonority of this instrument that made him want to record this keyboard transcription of Haydn's Seven Last Words of Christ on the cross.

Transcription, for Franz Liszt, was in equal measure a means of celebrating the genius of Beethoven and of meditating on his works. It was also a way of provoking a well-nigh titanic confrontation between the resources of the pianist and his instrument and the immense potential of the orchestra. Thus the power of the interpreter's conception, his understanding of the essence of the work, become the crucial factor in Liszt's approach and in the adventure offered to the listener. For the third volume of his complete set of Liszt's transcriptions of the Beethoven symphonies, Yury Martynov has chosen a piano of 1867 made by Blüthner, whose instruments were much admired by Liszt.

Image Symphonie fantastique

This monumental work of French Romanticism is one of the essential landmarks in the career of any conductor. The quality of Berlioz's orchestration and questions of timbre and the ideal instrumental forces lie at the core of the approach of Jos van Immerseel and Anima Eterna Brugge, who are increasingly drawn to French composers and especially to their precise, shimmering orchestral textures. Surprisingly enough, it was the influence of the master orchestrator Rimsky-Korsakov on Ravel that made Jos van Immerseel want to tackle such pieces as Bolero and La Valse in a recording singled out by the press in 2006 for its hypnotic power and the quality of the timbres and phrasing. Berlioz follows in this same line in 2010, with Poulenc planned for 2011 and Debussy for 2012. It should be remembered that Jos van Immerseel was taught in Antwerp by Eugène Traye, himself a pupil of Robert Casadesus and chamber music partner of Jean Laurent and Arthur Grumiaux, in a highly Francophile musical tradition. Over long months of preparation, the musicians steeped themselves in Berlioz's music, his Treatise on instrumentation and his Memoirs, and gradually formed an image of the construction of this masterpiece in which poetry, imagination, lyricism, rhythmic invention and evocative power form the basis of a purely Romantic language of great subtlety. The choice of period instruments (double basses from the period just after the instrument was modernised, French 'omnitonic' clarinets by Müller, 'ordinary' flutes from before the invention of the Boehm system, valved horns with crooks to avoid transposition, an ophicleide, an Érard harp, timpani with a central screw played with the sticks specifically called for by Berlioz, two Érard pianos to provide low harmonics in imitation of bells in the Dies irae of the Songe d'une nuit de sabbat), familiarity with Berlioz's Treatise on instrumentation and Pierre Baillot's L'Art de jouer du violon (notably with respect to vibrato), and respect for the composer's dynamics constitute the principal bases for the sound world of this interpretation, which is at once refined in its Classical style and haunted by the pungent timbres of the brass and of those diabolical clarinets, abyssal bells, and rattling death-march timpani. 'The result may be regarded as surprising and unexpected. Every moment of the performance testifies to the musical and technical mastery of the interpreters and their understanding of the grammar of this music, but also reflects their passion for and fascination with it.'

Orchestre d'Auvergne / Arie van Beek

After a praised discography; Ciacconas of JS BACH diapason découverte in 2005, Préludes, Chorals & Fugues de JS BACH diapason d'or in 2009, several records in romantic music; Schumann in 2007, Chopin in 2010, Edna Stern offers her first concerto recording.

She chose early Mozart concertos which played many times in a quintet format and for which she rediscovered this chamber approach with the soloist of the Orchestre d'Auvergne.

As Mozart left Salzbourg's archibishop to become an independant musician, his new concertos are a true change compared to the baroque form of concertos where the soloist was at the center followed by the orchestra. Mozart chose a passionate dialogue between the piano and individual members of the orchestra, where the piano express its feeling and the orchestra comments them, the winds play at the first person. "Both the level and the nature of the dialogue in K.271 were without precedent. So was the promotion of the wind section to the front ranks of musical diplomacy." Jeremy Siepmann,

"In my view the modern piano, with its immense possibilities, can evoke at the same time or successively a whole host of characters and feelings, as in an opera. But it also retains sufficient distance to be able to express itself metaphorically. These characters seem to speak to us, but not in specific terms. Only the extreme precision of their phrasing makes them real and close to us. It's all there in the notes, with incredible skill in the detail! And that's what I love in these concertos: a skill that is so poetic and touching." Edna Stern

Olivier Fortin

With this first project for Zig-Zag Territories, the musicians of the Canadian ensemble Masques under the direction of the harpsichordist Olivier Fortin demonstrate their passion for the music of the Austrian Baroque composer Johann Heinrich Schmelzer.

Like most of his contemporaries (Biber, Walther, Sances), Schmelzer gives music a dual purpose: 'Music is a pleasure for the saints and for men; it is an act of devotion, but also a symbol of human virtue.' His collection Sacro-profanus concentus musicus is a masterly illustration of this credo. Ensemble Masques - formed of a core of six instrumentalists specialising in Baroque music - offers us sonatas for five and six instruments from this collection, alternating with character pieces like Die Fechtschule (an evocation of battle), Die Polnische Sackpfeiffe, and the famous Lamento sopra il morte Ferdinandi III. This varied programme highlights the diversity and the Italian inspiration of Schmelzer's music.

The pianistic universe of Chopin is radical, in its harmony, its articulation, its melismata, its phrasing. This radicality is heard both as expressive violence - Chopin is an extremist - and as a perpetual interrogation of the foundations of the piano. Its virtuosity is never demonstrative: one always encounters harmonic problems closely linked to the placing of the hand, in an equilibrium constantly compromised and immediately restored.

John Greaves is a bit of an enigma. Apart from his solo career, he has played bass with Michael Nyman, sung opera with Jack Bruce, collaborated with Robert Wyatt and Carla Bley, played piano with Robert Crumb.

His improvising band with Elton Dean was described by “The Guardian” as « the free-jazz equivalent of early Who. As composer/songwriter/singer, in the last two decades he has produced a stack of albums strangely wonderful and wonderfully strange, indefinable and timeless. Why does he seem to be a well-kept secret ? It’s true he lives mostly in Paris.

The new French Dictionnaire du Rock allows him a whole page; in the British equivalent you’ll be lucky to learn he was a part of the infamous Henry Cow and then National Health, or that he continues to collaborate with old friend Peter Blegvad, hardly a household name either. It’s true he’s hard to put a label on. One suspects he relishes this.

At the beginning of this century He released (simultaneously) two albums: The Caretaker and On the street where you live, the first another collection of unique songs this time fired by a full-blast rock band, the second a selection of standards which finds Greaves crooning with undisguised pleasure the repertoire we suspect he hasn’t touched since performing with his father’s dance band in the sixties.

Since then there's been "The Trouble with Happiness" (the title says it all) - Greaves' song exploded, reconstructed by Vincent Courtois and Sophia Domancich; "Chansons", the first "French" record sung by the supernatural Elise Caron. "Maman":"In and out of life" ("Making trip hop available to old farts like me" says Mr. Greaves.)

Now there's “Greaves/Verlaine.

As the Habsbourg were losing the indies, flandres, Italy...as the Golden century was glimmering his last stars... The arts entered a period of pessimism and disillusionment, made of scorned loves, tales of cloak and dagger... expressed through satirical or moralising poems, turned into courtly or theatrical songs. The Tonos Humanos, only known piece of José Marin stands on this ground, with poetry of Lope de Vega and are made of great musical originality: madrigalism, chromatism where the harmonical role of guitar is outstandingly developed. Francisco Guerau's pieces are outstanding and purely instrumental.

"I have structured the programme in three 'days', because this is the virtual period of the action of the seventeenth-century plays with which this music is so closely linked. Let us hope that the beauty of these tonos humanos will encourage stage directors and producers to include them in their future adaptations of Spanish classical theatre, so that they may be restored to their rightful place."

In "La difficulté d'être", Jean Cocteau says of Satie (whom he saw every morning for a long period of his life): 'He inherited a grave eccentricity from his Scottish ancestry. . . . Egotistical, cruel, obsessive, he would listen to nothing that did not conform to his dogma and would fly into furious rages with anything that disturbed it. Egotistical, because he thought only of his music. Cruel, because he defended his music. Obsessive, because he polished his music. And his music was tender. And so he was, too, in his own way. . . . He cleaned himself with pumice stone. He never used water. At a time when music surged forth in floods, recognising Debussy's genius but fearful of his despotism (they remained on friendly but quarrelsome terms right up to the end), he turned his back on the latter's school and became, at the Schola Cantorum, the odd sort of Socrates we knew. 'There he pumiced, defied, smoothed himself, and forged the little orifice through which his exquisite force needed only to flow from its source.'

Doulce Memoire

In the margin of official religious institutions, Catholic confraternities and Muslim orders offered a mystical experience. Music played an important role in their rituals, as a way of access to God. Simple, repetitive, haunting, this music sung in groups during processions or devotional meetings was intended to place the assembly in a state of ecstatic trance.

In this recording Denis Raisin Dadre presents a dialogue between the repertory of the 16th-century Italian confraternities and that of the Persian Sufi orders. In both cultures, this music which drives believers into a state of mystical intoxication was disapproved of by the upholders of a certain orthodoxy. For the Church, the fervour produced by such bodily jubilation sometimes came uncomfortably close to a bacchanal!

'This project, born of an intuition, turned out to be astonishingly self-evident when we realised it. Over and above the cultural differences, these songs have exactly the same aim: to encourage believers to practise a ritual that will allow them to stand outside themselves, so as to understand become aware of what lies beyond their understanding. It was this universality of the rites that so fascinated us.' Denis Raisin Dadre

Akademia/ Françoise Lasserre

On this new CD, Françoise Lasserre, director of Akademia, wants to share with us her sense of wonder at the emotional power of Monteverdi's music. Monteverdi wrote in the preface to his eighth book of madrigals that on hearing the Combattimento, 'All the nobility were so deeply moved by compassion that they almost shed tears' - as were the audiences before whom Akadêmia performed the work in the little churches of the Champagne-Ardenne region four centuries later.

Following the trail of Monteverdi, Françoise Lasserre reads this 'combat' in the light of the ancients, the philosophers who had such influence on this key period of musical history by dictating the rules of the representation of the passions (Aristotle) and the imitation of nature (Plato).

Jan van Elsacker as Testo, a narrator who 'wants to enfold everyone within his heart', Hervé Lamy as a haughty Tancredi, and Guillemette Laurens as a warrior maiden transfigured by her final baptism.

The same interpretative approach is confirmed in the other pieces, the Nymph's lament, the 'songs of war or love' - all these compositions exude an emotional power that operates like the catharsis described by Aristotle.

Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg / Emmanuel Krivine

The beginning of collaboration between ZZT, Emmanuel Krivine and the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra, with an exceptional guest: Karine Deshayes.

This disc brings together some of Maurice Ravel's most popular scores, in particular the Bolero, and Karine Deshayes gives a highly moving interpretation of Shéhérazade, in the tradition of the great Régine Crespin, which the latter had mentioned herself.

Willi Apel, one of the great twentieth-century experts on harpsichord music, declared: 'With d'Anglebert, French keyboard music reaches its highest point of Baroque magnificence and fulness. His skill in continuing a melody, contrapuntally interweaving voices, concatenating harmonies by way of suspensions, and always using meaningful figures as ornaments brings to a final culmination and maturity what his teacher, Chambonnières, began . . .' Laurent Stewart chose to record at la Salle Varèse du Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique of Lyon, on his harpsichord copie of a Rückers 1638 « petit ravalement ». The somptuous basses of this harpsichord underlines d'Anglebert's music magnificently.

This recording was born of a shared desire on the part of all the members of Kumquat: to capture the energy of the group in the unique moment of a concert while combining this with the technical precision of the studio, the better to highlight the contours of the most complex sections. The pieces on this CD were recorded in three stages: a live recording and two studio sessions. The experience of editing together the two acoustics and energies reveals a discourse conducive to renewing the listener's attention. In the raw 'live' sound of "La revanche de l'ogresse" one can distinguish the editing process made possible by the studio. "Le mouton ou le café?" the piece that was at the origin of the animated short film, is a characteristic example of this. Although its music is more abstract than figurative in inspiration, Kumquat wishes to open up its creative space to plastic expression. On this CD, the encounter with the animated film by the three directors and visual artists Nikodio, Paat and Monalison reveals a narrative dimension which offers new keys to let you hear the music of Kumquat differently.

Image String Quartet No. 10

"The award-winning Atrium Quartet find a fascinating range of moods in Shostakovich's Fifth String Quartet, not least a sense of fun that threatens to spiral into something far more sinister. The musical emotions remain mixed right to the end, in a performance as thought-provoking as it is involving, If their Beethoven (String Quartet No 10) doesn't reach these heights, this is still a disc to have."

For the Atrium Quartet, to couple Beethoven and Shostakovich seemed self-evident: in the realm of the string quartet, these composers dominated their respective eras, and both made an indelible mark on the history of the genre. They left a number of works with similar features; both men juxtapose strongly contrasted moods, shifting rapidly from violence to meditative inwardness, from insouciance to melancholy. Moreover, it is well known that thirteen of Shostakovich's fifteen quartets were premiered by the Beethoven Quartet, founded in Moscow in 1923. This formation had made a name for itself by performing the complete cycle of Beethoven quartets in 1927, for the commemoration of the centenary of the composer's death. Because of the demise of its cellist, Sergey Shirinsky, it was unable to give the premiere of Shostakovich's String Quartet no.15, which was entrusted to the Taneyev Quartet - whose cellist Joseph Levinson subsequently became the mentor of the Atrium Quartet. So, a Beethoven-Shostakovich coupling?
Self-evident, no doubt about it.
