Songs of ecstasy and devotion from a 17th century Italian convent

Catherine King, mezzo-soprano
Musica Secreta

Re-released to coincide with International Women’s Day on 8th March 2016, Songs of Ecstasy and Devotion celebrates the Italian composer Lucrezia Vizzana, whose musical accomplishments have been overlooked due to her gender.

Musica Secreta, an ensemble dedicated to discovering and performing repertoire by women composers, create an exquisite sound with a performance that provides a fascinating musical insight.

This recording features Vizzana’s complete surviving works: twenty finely crafted motets which are both sensual and spiritual.

Vizzana learnt her craft from the Italian masters of Bologna, often in secret, creating works reminiscent of Monteverdi.

The publication of Vizzana’s Componimenti Musicali in1623 was a remarkable achievement having overcome the confines of both her gender and the convent to achieve renown as a composer.

Nearly four hundred years later women composers are still massively underrepresented throughout musical history, but Songs of Ecstasy and Devotion demonstrates why their voices should be more widely heard

Breathe Freely is a new opera by contemporary Scottish composer Julian Wagstaff.

Written for three singers and piano trio, it is a chamber opera in two acts set in 1943 against the backdrop of the Second World War.

At its heart Julian Wagstaff's opera is a manifold celebration of human endeavour, history, interest, compassion, and, of course, chemistry at the University of Edinburgh.

It recounts the semi-fictional story of several real and extraordinary chemists who helped to make the Chemistry department the extraordinary institution it is today: Romantic pragmatist Stanislaw Hempel, endearing perfectionist Chrissie Miller and Professor James Kendall FRS, whose book is the basis for the synopsis.

Breathe Freely was premiered in 2013 to celebrate the tricentenary of the appointment of the first Chair of Chemistry at the University of Edinburgh.

Also included on the recording is Wagstaff's piano trio A Persistent Illusion commissioned to celebrate the International Year of Chemistry, 2011. The title refers to Einstein's observation that the distinction between the past, present and future is merely a 'stubbornly persistent illusion'.

Julian Wagstaff first came to public attention in 2001 with the musical John Paul Jones, based on the life of the Scots-born sailor and hero of the American Revolution. The musical was revived in 2010 in association with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.

A specific interest in German history is reflected in Treptow for string orchestra (2005), Wagstaff's most performed work.

Wagstaff enjoyed a sell-out success on the 2007 Edinburgh Festival Fringe with his opera The Turing Test, about the quest to build a truly intelligent machine.

The Breathe Freely Ensemble is Paul Curievici (tenor), Phil Gault (baritone) and Laura Margaret Smith (mezzo-soprano) with Pete Furniss (clarinet), Mark Bailey (cello) and Andrew Johnston (piano).

Derek Clark's career spans forty years and includes conducting engagements with Welsh National Opera and Scottish Opera ranging from Monteverdi to Maxwell Davies.

Ticciati cements his reputation as an outstanding Berliozian with his latest recording, L'enfance du Christ, featuring the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus.

Robin Ticciati and the SRSO are joined by a sterling cast of soloists including: Stephan Loges, winner of the Wigmore Hall International Song Competition, Veronique Gens, whose recording of Berlioz' Les nuits d'été was named Gramophone 'Editor's Choice', Yann Beuron, who was unanimously awarded first prize in 1996 from the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, and Alistair Miles, who has been called 'the finest British bass of his generation' (The Guardian).

Berlioz's mighty oratorio was an immediate success and was praised by all but two critics in the Paris newspapers; over 150 years later it is still as popular.

Named one of the top ten young 'conductors on the verge of greatness' by Gramophone, Robin delivers fresh insights and vivid colours into this luminous work. Since his recording debut Robin's profile has continued to build; in 2011 Gramophone voted him one of 'Tomorrow's Icons' and he was announced as the next music director of Glyndebourne, taking over from Vladimir Jurowski in 2014.

This special '40th Anniversary Edition' celebrates the Scottish Chamber Orchestra's fortieth year with a brand new recording of Wagner's Siegfried Idyll conducted by Principal Conductor Robin Ticciati.

An additional hand-picked selection of works, conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras and Joseph Swensen, from across its decade-long partnership with Linn completes the programme.

Although more commonly played in a version for full orchestra rather than for chamber ensemble, this recording of Siegfried Idyll is closer to Wagner's premiere performance, a birthday gift to his wife, Cosima.

As Principal Conductor of the SCO from 1996-2005 Joseph Swensen made five thrilling recordings in all, encompassing Brahms, Mendelssohn, Dvorak, Prokofiev and 'Sibelius: Theatre Music' from which The Tempest is taken.

Composed when Sibelius was reaching the climax of his career, the ambitious second Suite contains some of his most inspired ideas and finest music; it is a mouth-watering addition to this program.

The three-time Grammy-nominated ensemble, widely regarded as 'one of the world's premier periodinstruments bands' (Fanfare), will mark the beginning of its relationship with Linn with a recording of Haydn's The Creation.

Soloists Amanda Forsythe soprano, Keith Jameson tenor and Kevin Deas bass-baritone will join the ensemble and conductor Martin Pearlman for the performance of Haydn's crowning achievement.

The Creation remains one of the greatest works of choral repertoire and has been astonishing audiences since its premiere in 1798.

The ensemble's previous performances of The Creation have received rave reviews, with the Boston Globe stating: 'Boston Baroque performed [Haydn's Creation] with vibrant color and a fleet momentum...and made it a vivid, effervescent occasion.'

Founded in 1973 by Martin Pearlman, Boston Baroque is already familiar to an international audience with its critically acclaimed catalogue of recordings.

Boston Baroque's recordings-of which Fanfare magazine wrote 'each one is an incomparable gem'- are heard by millions on classical radio stations in North America and Europe.

Boston Baroque's many career milestones include the American premiere of Rameau's Zoroastre; a Mozart opera series including Marriage of Figaro, Così fan tutte, and the American period-instrument premieres of Mozart's Don Giovanni and The Magic Flute; and a revelatory exploration of the Beethoven symphonies on period instruments.

Double 180 gm vinyl LP pressing features new, original artwork, a beautifully designed eight-page booklet and is presented in a gatefold sleeve. 2009 release, the eighth album from the producer, remixer and Ambient pioneer. His signature sound - sleek and lush, but leaving a cool slipstream in it's wake - is immediately recognizable. Most of tracks on the album feature vocals, even if they are only textures in the mix - and their placement within the track is planned with a remixer's ear for shifts of perspective. 'This is more of a party record than the previous ones,' says William Orbit. 'It's not a serious, po-faced record, it's not ambient - although it has it's ambient moments.' Although My Oracle Lives Uptown is probably William Orbit's most immediate album, it's so subtly layered that it only reveals itself fully after a number of plays. And like his other solo albums, it will surely be resistant to the ageing process. His vision is idiosyncratic and original enough to not to have to try to play catch-up with anyone else, which gives his music a curiously timeless feel.

The sonic grandeur of Monteverdi's spectacular masterpiece is expertly realized in this recording by John Butt and Dunedin Consort.

Together with the virtuoso players of His Majestys Sagbutts and Cornetts and a star-studded line up, including Peter Harvey, Joanne Lunn and Nicholas Mulroy, Dunedin Consort delivers the perfect recording to celebrate the 450th anniversary of Monteverdi's birth.

The raison d'être for this recording was reinforced following a performance of the Vespers at the 2016 Lammermuir Festival which wowed the critics: The Herald called it superbly stylish...an exhilarating performance whilst The Scotsman stated it is hard to imagine a more exquisite, deeply felt performance.

In direct contrast to the more typically lavish stagings John Butt's preference for single part performance brings a welcome sense of intimacy to Monteverdi's most famous work.

In eschewing the pomp and circumstance John Butt's approach delivers a fresh, modern performance that allows the individuality of the soloists to shine.

Award winning British Jazz Singer of the Year Claire Martin, International Cabaret award winner Barb Jungr and Neasden Queen of Soul Mari Wilson, solo and in harmony, bring the songs you love to hate to life again in this glamorous celebration of all things girlie.

"Take three of the UK's finest female vocalists, add a bunch of songs at the oh-so-cheesy end of the spectrum and sprinkle liberally with postmodern irony and that, in a nutshell, is Girl Talk. As camp as Christmas and huge fun, this brassy, sassy and supremely arch review takes a deliciously tongue-in-cheek look at love, marriage and make-up in the 21st century via the hallowed classics of yesteryear. Heard solo and in glorious three-part harmony, Mari Wilson, Barb Jungr and Claire Martin are all fabulous singers in their own right, and by some strange work of alchemy their respective worlds of pop, cabaret and jazz combine seamlessly in this common cause. Of course one can't ignore the fact that some of these songs are in fact completely brilliant. It's great to hear Bacharach and David's "Wives and Lovers", Sondheim's "Ladies Who Lunch" and the evergreen Motown number "It Should've Been Me". Also included are such epics of stereotyping as "A Woman's Touch" ("A touch of paint, one magic nail, can turn a kitchen chair into a Chippendale"), complete with its comedic music hall style arrangement. In the role of MD, accompanist and producer Adrian York performs heroically." (Jazzwise, Peter Quinn, 2006)

"Post-feminism made flesh. The ever-inventive Jungr has recruited sometime associate and the formerly bee-hived Neasden Queen of Soul alongside her labelmate (and neighbour of Wilson) Martin for an ever-so-tongue-in-cheek cruise through some of the least politically correct songs in the popular song repertoire. Bacharach and David's 1960s shockers Wishin' and Hopin' and Wives and Lovers, the rather more ambiguous late-seventies sentiments of Messrs Costello and Jackson (Girls Talk and Different for Girls), showtunes and Motown classics - all are slickly performed in close harmony with fine piano accompaniment from Adrian York. No offence girls, but you have to be old enough to know better to be this damned smart." (The Herald, Keith Bruce, 2006)

The fifth recording from the talented students of London’s Royal Academy pairs Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale with music by Harrison Birtwistle and Peter Maxwell Davies. For his debut recording with Linn, conductor Oliver Knussen has assembled an impressive cast of contemporary composers for The Soldier’s Tale: Harrison Birtwistle as the soldier and George Benjamin as the Devil, with actress Dame Harriet Walter as the narrator. The longest work on this disc, The Soldier’s Tale mixes fiendishly difficult changes of time signature with Stravinsky’s newly discovered love of jazz with melodies which echo his larger pre-war scores. It is also a work that demonstrates immense clarity and moving simplicity at times, and a sardonic wit at others. With such a starry cast this recording will be of particular interest to those with an interest in contemporary music, especially considering the addition of two new Birtwistle world premiere versions of Chorale from a Toy Shop written specially for the recording. The rest of the programme includes an exquisite Knussen arrangement of Maxwell Davies’ Canon ad honorem Igor Stravinsky, intermixed with Stravinsky’s own late commemorative miniatures. One of the pre-eminent composer-conductors in the world today, Oliver Knussen CBE is presently Sir Richard Rodney Bennett Professor of Music at the Royal Academy of Music. Markku Luolajan-Mikkola, baroque cello

With two Gramophone Awards to his name and a reputation synonymous with excellence, Markku Luolajan-Mikkola is a musician who is at the top of his profession.

With an established fan base built over his two decades with viol consort Phantasm, Luolajan-Mikkola makes his solo Linn debut in style, tackling what is considered the pinnacle of Bach's output for violinists: the Sonatas and Partitas.

Transcribing these hugely popular works for cello, especially one in Baroque set-up, was not without its risks, although performing on Baroque cello also offers compelling advantages.

Luolajan-Mikkola takes his interpretative cue from the set-up of the Baroque instrument, which informs such issues as tuning, vibrato, fingering and articulation.

Performing the Sonatas and Partitas on the cello is so challenging that it is almost impossible to imagine a cellist of Bach's day playing them, but Luolajan-Mikkola rises to the challenge with aplomb.

Image Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen
Historical performance pioneer Trevor Pinnock conducts the Royal Academy of Music Soloists Ensemble in revealing chamber arrangements from Mahler to Zemlinksy.Mahler: Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (arr.Schoenberg) is the third in the series which sees Trevor and the Academy perform and record works which are retrospectively reigniting Schoenberg's vision of performing chamber reductions of symphonic repertoire. The works in this recording transport us to a period of vast musical change: in Mahler we hear nostalgia welded with modernism with Wagner, we hear the sunset of Romanticism with Zemlinsky we hear the seeds of fin-de-siecle Vienna and in all, the extremities of emotion distilled into non-symphonic forces.Arnold Schoenberg's own arrangement of Mahler's intensely personal song cycle is followed by Erwin Stein's arrangement of Busoni's landmark composition Berceuse elegiaque.Specially commissioned for this chamber series is Christopher Austin's arrangement of Zemlinsky's evocative Sechs Gesange, which enjoys its premiere recording here.Closing the disc is Wagner's infamous Siegfried Idyll.? The arrangements for chamber forces serve to illuminate the original scores the clarity achieved in these performances expose revealing new insights.Trevor Pinnock is recognised worldwide as a harpsichordist and conductor who pioneered performance on historical instruments with his own orchestra, The English Concert.2014 saw Pinnock return to conduct The English Concert in a fortieth anniversary celebration concert at Wigmore Hall, where he also gave a solo harpsichord recital. In 'Pinnock's Passions', he curated four themed concerts with guest musicians and speakers at the new candlelit Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at The Globe.Pinnock's contribution to musical life at the Royal Academy of Music is considerable, with regular conducting commitments as Principal Guest Conductor of the Academy's Concert Orchestra in addition to conducting Royal Academy Opera productions.'Pinnock directs a disciplined and expressive performance...' The piece is one of the most original conceptions of the 19th century - deftly poised between symphony and stage drama. Image The Masque of Moments
Elizabeth Kenny’s Theatre of the Ayre reveals some of the most extraordinary music of the 17th century on The Masque of Moments, their debut recording for Linn. Focusing on the ‘Ayre’, the central part of a Masque, it offers a fascinating glimpse of the audacious and experimental virtuosity that is often absent from our image of English music of this time. Inspired by the achievements of the ‘Lutes and Voices’, Kenny developed The Masque of Moments in 2015, highlighting the glories of little-known vocal music from the Jacobean and Caroline masque. The ‘Lutes’’plucked sound world, of which this recording gives a hint, reflects a cornucopia of sounds used to create everything from a tavern scene to a reflection of paradise. The ‘Voices’ come courtesy of Sophie Daneman, William Purefoy, Ian Wicks, Nicholas Mulroy, Giles Underwood, Rosanna Wicks and Salisbury Cathedral Choir. Founded in 2007, Theatre of the Ayre is Elizabeth Kenny’s platform for bringing dramatically-minded singers and players together to create inspirational programmes of 17th century music. They have performed in and broadcast from major Festivals across the UK, Belgium and Germany. Their performances relish the shift from sublime tragedy to knockabout comedy that is ever-present in 17th century music. Lutes&Ukes, Theatre of the Ayre’s groundbreaking collaboration with members of the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, has become known to audiences as a ‘genre-crashing supergroup’ following tours in 2013 and 2015. Kenny is one of Europe’s leading lute players and has played with many of the world’s best period instrument groups, including Les Arts Florissants and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. ‘This early music ensemble has made an asset of obscurity. Its weapons: a freshness of approach and a quasi-improvisatory freedom of delivery.’ FT ‘It’s not often you witness a player attacking their instrument with a bottleneck while another strokes theirs with a quill… both created sublime musical expressions of melancholy.’ The Guardian ‘Theatre of the Ayre…compellingly dramatizing the French Baroque in vocal and instrumental prowess.’ The Times

Brahms & Schumann: Lieder sees Dame Ann Murray, one of the great vocal artists of the past decades, return to the recording studio to perform a personal selection of Lieder.Brahms & Schumann: Lieder, Anns first solo album in over a decade, will be her final Lieder recording and a fitting way to draw her long and distinguished recording career to a close. Still a regular fixture on the opera circuit, Anns voice remains impressive. Following a Brahms recital at Wigmore Hall earlier this year, The Times stated: Her still-penetrating mezzo was the highlight of the evening. With Malcolm Martineau at the piano, this beautifully balanced programme sees Ann perform some of her favourite works by Schumann and Brahms. The recording features Malcolm Martineau (piano) Benjamin Appl (baritone), John Mark Ainsley (tenor), Johnny Langridge (tenor & Anns son) and Hester Dickson (piano & Malcolms mother).
