Hannah Morrison (soprano), Meg Bragle (mezzo), Nicholas Mulroy (tenor) & Peter Harvey (bass)

Monteverdi Choir & English Baroque Soloists, John Eliot Gardiner

This album follows the acclaimed release of the Ascension Oratorio. It features soloists Hannah Morrison (soprano), Meg Bragle (mezzo), Nicholas Mulroy (tenor), Peter Harvey (bass). The Easter Oratorio, one of the less performed of Bach's choral works, was first composed as a simple cantata and later revised to become a more polished piece with a meditative emphasis.

Actus tragicus, composed for a funeral, has an unusually soft toned instrumentation (recorders, viola da gamba and organ) which make it sound both consoling and full of optimism.

The album is packaged in our usual casebook packaging and contains a 28 pages booklet with notes by John Eliot Gardiner and texts in German, English and French.

In March 2014, the Monteverdi Choir will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary.

Phi on belgialaisen barokkimusiikin tuntijan Philippe Herreweghen (s. 1947) vuonna 2011 perustama oma levymerkki, jolle kapellimestari on levyttänyt musiikkikirjallisuuden suurteoksia yhdessä perustamansa Collegium Vocale Gent -kuoron kanssa.

Image Messiah (2 SACD)
Experience the transcendent glory of Messiah in Sir Andrew Davis’s new, majestic, must-hear edition of Handel’s beloved classic.

Recorded live for SACD release in surround sound, this unique version makes use of all the colours available from the modern symphony orchestra to underline the mood and meaning of the individual movements. Without detracting from the innate power of the original, the conductor’s score calls for moments of drama, pathos, and even, sometimes, whimsicality. It is supported by substantial brass and woodwind forces, and several percussion instruments (including marimba!). As he explains in a very personal booklet note, this leading British conductor brings immense dedication to what is probably the most famous piece of British sacred music ever composed, this version being one which he has conducted live only a few times, including on this recording. He confesses: ‘Everything I have done instrumentally stems from the enormous respect, even awe, which I feel towards this supreme masterpiece’.

Estonian composer Arvo Part’s timeless music has touched listeners for decades. He is one of the most performed living composers. This new release features eight choral pieces which were written between 1988 and 2012. These works feature some of Part’s finest vocal writing, especially in the three-movement Triodion and the seven-movement Sieben Magnificat-Antiphonen. Part is famous for his tintinnabuli style, which he took on after distancing himself from his earlier writing which utilized neo-classicism, serialism, and polystylism. Of his style, Part once wrote, “I could compare my music to white light which contains all colors. Only a prism can divide the colors and make them appear; this prism could be the spirit of the listener.” The Latvian Radio Choir’s prior releases for Ondone have garnered them critical acclaim. Their recording of Rachmaninov’s All-Night Vigil received the Record of the Month, Editor’s Choice, and was a nominee for the Gramophone Awards in 2013.

Sigvards Klavan johdolla Latvian Radiokuoro on noussut maailman kamarikuorojen eliittiin. Kuoron sointi on taianomaisessa samettisuudessaan häikäisevä ja sopii täydellisen autenttisesti Rahmaninovin Vigilian pyhiin tunnelmiin.

Vigilia on Ondinen neljäs julkaisu Latvian radiokuoron kanssa.

Chor and Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks / Mariss Jansons

Dvorák's haunting 'Stabat Mater' for solo voices, chorus and orchestra is not only the most famous work of church music by the Bohemian composer - it is also one of the most impressive ever settings of the medieval hymn in which Mary, the mother of Jesus, gives vivid expression to the pain she feels at the sight of her crucified son. The terrible misfortunes that befell the composer in his private life during the creation of this work may have been a reason for this. It is the continuous expression of deep piety, above all, that gives this music its special dignity. It was precisely this intensity that was conveyed by the concert on March 26, 2015 in the Herkulessaal of the Munich Residenz, where the four renowned soloists were in fine voice, and the Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks once again delivered the "crystal clear sound" and "incredible three-dimensionality" for which it is highly praised time and again. And the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, conducted by Mariss Jansons, performed Dvorák's deeply moving music authentically, in keeping with the composer's intentions: sensitively felt, yet with a resonant, magnificent sound. The live recording of Dvorak's "Stabat Mater" has been re-released by BR KLASSIK on CD.
