'No summit of solemnity was inaccessible to her, and it was particularly music of spiritual meaning that seemed her most personal domain.' Thus wrote the distingushed conductor Bruno Walter about the contralto Kathleen Ferrier, whose highly individual, plangent voice, natural musicianship and high level of personal professionalism made her one of England's most popular singers during her all-too-brief career. This disc compiles a large number of her recordings of arias by Bach and Handel, to whose music she brought breadth, nobility and deep emotional commitment. She is accompanied by Sir Adrian Boult and Reginald Jacques, both major figures in England's post-war musical life. The Cantata recording appears on CD for the first time.

Kathleen Ferrier was one of the greatest British singers of the 20th century. Her performances of the St Matthew Passion were the stuff of legend, and she herself said, 'You've never heard me sing if you haven't heard me in Bach.' In 1947 she began a series of sessions to record the Matthew Passion, but several factors, including a full diary of concert engagements at home and abroad, meant that the recording was not completed until June 1948. The 1949 recording of Bach's Cantata 'Hold in affection Jesus Christ', BWV 67 made to mark the bicentenary of the composer's death, here receives its first ever release on CD.

This release contains all of Schnabel’s commercial disc recordings of the works of J. S. Bach, a composer whose keyboard music the pianist felt was too intimate for performance in the concert hall. One of Schnabel’s greatest talents was the ability to employ not only seemingly natural tempos but, more importantly, the perfect tempo relationship between sections and movements. Of the recording of the Toccata in C minor, BWV 911, one critic wrote upon its release, ‘Schnabel has rarely made a more satisfying recording than this. He refuses speed and brilliance to the opening Allegro moderato, taking it more slowly than is usual… he makes the transition to the Adagio seem inevitably right.’ The Prelude and Fugue from The Well- Tempered Clavier was the last recording Schnabel made before his death in 1951.

Canadian pianist Glenn Gould's first Columbia recording, his classic 1955 Goldberg Variations [Naxos 8.111247], and second, Beethoven's last three piano sonatas [Naxos 8.111299], were followed by this 1957 rendition of Bach's D minor Concerto, praised by The New York Times critic Harold Schoenberg for its 'considerable dash... fine ensemble and musical finesse'. Of Gould's re-recordings of two keyboard partitas (he was dissatisfied with the first takes from 1956) one critic registered his astonishment when 'confronted with the naked imagination and sensitivity of a genius'.The two fugues from The Well-Tempered Clavier are further testimony to Gould, the creative artist, shedding new light on familiar works with conviction.

Wanda Landowska, who continued to perform and record up to her death in 1959, was renowned as the greatest harpsichordist of the first half of the twentieth century. Book II of her recording of Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier was made between 1951 and 1954 at her home in Lakeville Connecticut. As with all of Landowska’s recordings, what strikes the listener most is her vitality, her musical integrity, and her total commitment to the music she is playing. Landowska brings a unique mood, style and character to the great Prelude and Fugue in E major which she described as ‘one of the most perfect works of music.’ Her heartfelt interpretation of the Prelude and Fugue in F sharp minor can be best summed up in her own words: ‘When Bach writes of sorrow, it never crushes us. Perhaps because there is no trace of bitterness. This music, even if it describes rebellion or anguish, fortifies us.’ Landowska’s recording of Book I is available on Naxos 8.110314-15.

Walter Gieseking's interpretations of Bach in the early years of his career gained him laurels for 'his control over shades of tone, especially over infinite gradations in the range between piano and pianissimo, the clear definition of his agile finger-work, and the firm outlines of his rhythm and phrasing...This style, so lucid and so rhythmical, is the perfect vehicle for Bach's keyboard music...' Gieseking's 1931 account of Beethoven's 'Tempest' Sonata also won him contemporary critical accolades: 'perfect playing matched with perfect recording. I know of no better interpretation of this sonata...a splendid achievement, one of the high water marks of piano recording'.

Volume 1 of this new Naxos edition of Wilhelm Furtwängler’s pre- 1940s recordings includes an account of J.S. Bach’s third Brandenburg Concerto that is lightyears away from the ‘historically informed’ norm of today, yet eloquent, deeply-felt and with a real sense of light and shade. The two Mozart opera overtures are typically dramatic and intense, while in the ever-popular Eine kleine Nachtmusik Furtwängler caresses the melodies, allowing rhythms to stand proud and making effective use of dynamic contrasts. The Overture to Schubert’s Rosamunde is especially weighty in Furtwängler’s hands, while the B flat Entr’acte is tender and warmly expressed, and the G major Ballet Music puckish and witty.

• Continuing their survey of Bach transcriptions from the rich 78rpm era, Naxos Historical have assembled a historically interesting and musically rewarding listening experience. Although the paramount goals were to find brilliant performances of historic interest, they also always strove to find the best sounding recordings from the first half of the twentieth century.

• In this second volume in the continuing Naxos series devoted to historic recordings of piano transcriptions of Bach’s music, fifteen works are expertly transformed for the modern piano, by a wide range of artists ranging from Camille Saint-Saëns to Percy Grainger.

• The previous release in this series, (8.110658) won rave reviews in Pianist: “Naxos has worked small miracles on the sound quality….This is one of Naxos’s triumphs. If you’re still sceptical after reading this, take a leap of faith. The rewards (on a ridiculously small outlay) are legion.”

One of the great 20th century violinists, at his best Heifetz played the concerto and sonata repertoire with a strong command of structure, minute attention to detail and an unequalled sensuous beauty of tone. Although Heifetz regarded the music of Mozart and Bach as integral to his repertoire, his style was grounded in a Romantic sensibility that sometimes courted controversy. Of the Mozart Concertos, Heifetz favoured the D major, K218 (recorded on Naxos 8.110941) and the A major, K219, which is heard on this re-issue in the second of three he made. Heifetz recorded the two Bach solo concertos only once. On these and his first recording of the Double Concerto, Heifetz’s playing (of both parts) is typically elegant and emotionally charged.

The Canadian pianist Glenn Gould burst onto the world’s musical stage in January 1955 when he made his United States recital début in Washington D.C. with Bach’s Goldberg Variations. His 1955 recording of the work is one of the most important and influential piano discs of the second half of the twentieth century, leading not only to a wider appreciation of Bach’s keyboard works by the general public but to a fundamental re-appraisal of how Bach should be played. When the recording was released the American Record Guide headed its review with ‘The Record Début of Glenn Gould a Keyboard Genius.’ With its great attention to clarity and detail, little use of the sustaining pedal, and sometimes rapid or extreme tempos, this vital and exciting performance is the complete antithesis to the‘sewing-machine’ style of Bach playing.

Image Stokowski Transcriptions
The transcriptions of Bach's keyboard works for full symphony orchestra by Leopold Stokowski, one of the greatest conductors of the twentieth century, formed a successful part of his crusade to increase the accessibility of music. In reality Stokowski's transcriptions had little to do with Bach: they are rather complete re-compositions in the manner of Wagner or Tchaikovsky for the late-romantic symphony orchestra. They have enjoyed continuing popularity since Stokowski first introduced them, and took a central rôle in the internationally popularfilm which he made with Walt Disney, Fantasia. The recordings on this CD were made between 1927 and 1939, with Stokowski conducting in all instances The Philadelphia Orchestra, whose lush orchestra style was clearly well suited to his musical vision of Bach. Contemporary audiences and conductors continue to respond warmly to these re-compositions with many successful performances and re-recordings, such as those by José Serebrier (Naxos 8.557883).

Samuel Barber's passionate lyricism and fine craftsmanship as a composer are matched by his abilities as a conductor. Having learnt from the redoubtable Fritz Reiner, he ably meets the many challenges posed by his intense Second Symphony, composed while serving in the American Air Force during World War II. Although the self-critical Barber had misgivings about this work, he had no such reservations about his outgoing yet compact Cello Concerto which gained him the New York Music Critics' Circle Award in 1947. The concise and pithy concert suite from his opera Medea likewise abounds in his characteristic blend of drama and lyricism.

This disc presents Béla Bartók's complete published American Columbia recordings, made in a series of sessions in New York in April and May 1940. Although this was a time of great difficulty for the émigré composer, with the upheaval of migration, the strain of illness and several career challenges, one can only be compelled by the fire and dynamism of his playing and rewarded by his interaction with legendary violinist Joseph Szigeti and clarinetist Benny Goodman. These authoritative interpretations of his music rank among the musical treasures of the wartime discography.

Yehudi Menuhin commissioned and gave the first performance of Bartók's Sonata for Solo Violin and was an influential advocate of his music. This 1947 recording of the First Violin Sonata finds Menuhin in particularly intense and vivid form, his accomplishment equaled by Adolph Baller's virtuosity and perceptive musicianship. Of the four studio recordings Menuhin made of the composer's Second Violin Concerto, this 1953 rendition, while perhaps not flawless, certainly remains an unusually truthful and penetrating account of one of the twentieth century's most magnificent, challenging and emotionally satisfying violin concertos.

Glenn Gould played Beethoven's piano concertos from the beginning of his short concert career, this recording being made when he was 24, the same age as the composer when he wrote his Piano Concerto No. 2. Gould's vitality and enthusiasm in the first movement are particularly notable, as is Bernstein's highly expressive interpretation of the beautiful Adagio. Despite his temperamental aversion to chamber music and his preference for pre-romantic music, Gould's account with the Montreal String Quartet of Brahms's F minor Piano Quintet is clearly articulated, propulsive and highly focussed.

Walter Gieseking, piano

Hailed as 'the new Anton Rubinstein' early in his career, Walter Gieseking sought to convey all the excitement and drama in Beethoven's piano sonatas. This 1939 recording of the Waldstein Sonata was described in Gramophone as 'distinguished by an amazing range of tone-colour, a never-failing sensitiveness to the demands of the music, and tremendously vital rhythm.' The 'Appassionata' was received in America as 'a superb recording that conveys the most subtle nuances as well as emotional vigour', and the Sonata Op. 101 as 'one of the finest interpretations and recording...the work emerges with a balance and clarity that could not be improved upon.'

Not long after his February 1934 London Queen's Hall concert comprising three Mozart concertos, Schnabel made his first recording of a Mozart piano concerto, No. 27 in B flat major, K.595, at the recently opened and well equipped Abbey Road Studios. Completed in one session, this recording is notable not only for the excellence of its sound but for the moulding of the slow movement, taken at a slow tempo, but without any loss of the tension between successive notes or of the coherence of harmonic progressions. Schnabel's recording of the Concerto for two pianos, with his son Karl Ulrich, is made up entirely of first takes. In the Rondo in A minor, K.511, Schnabel beautifully shapes the phrases and avoids sentimentality or overt intensity of expression.

Herbert von Karajan established himself as one of the 20th century's greatest conductors, both in live performances and on recordings. Taken from the first of Karajan's four Beethoven symphony cycles, made in the splendid acoustic of London's Kingsway Hall, these are beautifully polished readings that traverse the decades with ease. The Karajan trademarks of 'perfection of balance and blend' can be heard, for example, in the beautifully pointed woodwind chording and weight of the pizzicatos at the opening of Symphony No. 1. No less telling is the opening of Symphony No. 3, which begins at a scorching pace, accents strong yet considered, followed by a broadly-based account of the Marcia funebre second movement which, while retaining Karajan's exacting approach, does not smooth out dissonance.

Otto Klemperer's complex artistry combined a remarkable understanding of architectural structure, a loving attention to detail and immense subtlety. Nowhere was this more evident than in his authoritative and compellingly lucid readings of Beethoven's music. This 1955 Eroica is a notable example, the young but fully seasoned Philharmonia Orchestra responding superbly to Klemperer's weighty and deliberate conception, which is yet rhythmically buoyant and filled with dynamic contrast. The highlight of this recording is the second movement Funeral March, solemn, tender and noble, whose universal pathos never lapses into sentimentality.

Volume 2 of the Naxos edition of Wilhelm Furtwängler's pre-1940s recordings begins with a weighty account of Beethoven's Egmont Overture followed by a galvanizing performance of the Symphony No. 5, Furtwängler's first recording of the work. This is presented complete for the first time: a few bars of music went unrecorded during the transition from the first to the second side of the third movement and are replaced here by the inclusion of the corresponding bars from Furtwängler's 1937 remake with the same orchestra. In the Overture to Weber's Der Freischütz, Furtwängler's volatile and 'free' conducting is remarkably convincing.

This Naxos Historical performance for the Great Conductors series was recorded during the performance of 29th July, 1951, at the Festspielhaus, Bayreuth. The re-opening of the Bayreuth Festival in 1951 represented a major step forward in the international rehabilitation of Germany following the end of the Second World War. As the leading conductor of his generation, Wilhelm Furtwängler was the obvious choice to conduct the opening performance of the Festival, traditionally devoted to a single work, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, the ‘Choral’.

This work had a deep spiritual significance for Furtwängler: he only agreed to conduct it on special occasions, and never made a studio recording of it. First released in 1955, after his death, the recording of this 1951 performance represents one of the most profound realisations of Beethoven’s masterpiece ever to have been committed to disc.

Praising Furtwangler’s earlier Naxos Historical release of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony last year (8110879), MusicWeb stated: “This disc offers a good example of why Wilhelm Furtwängler is regarded by so many good musical judges as a great conductor. These are performances that will grace any collection and I strongly recommend this disc.”

"Kreisler is at his very peak in this wonderful, poetically rich account of the Beethoven Concerto, particularly the ravishing account of the Larghetto which causes one to catch the breath at the rapt, Elysian quality of its expressive climax, while the finale releases the tension and is engagingly light-hearted. In Mark Obert-Thorn's splendid transfer, the 1926 recording, one of the very first made electrically (in the warm acoustic of the Berlin Singakademie), is astonishingly lifelike, and brings Kreisler's violin vividly into one's presence. Whichever recordings of the Beethoven you already have, this one is a must, with the Bach Adagio making a treasurable encore."

"An ardent anti-Nazi and co-founder of the Israel Philharmonic, Huberman played music as he felt it. Try the opening of the Tchaikovsky, initially quiet, then swooping upwards with a marked flourish, a formula that remains intact for the duration. And has anyone ever announced himself so confidently after the opening tutti of the Beethoven, climbing impatiently to ethereal heights? Huberman's playing, stylistically old-fashioned, isn't a 'comfortable' listen: he challenges, questions, teases, attacks and contemplates. But if ever a player had something to teach us, Huberman's the one."

One of the great pianists of the 20th century, Claudio Arrau arguably achieved his greatest postwar renown for the textual fidelity, spirituality and elegance of his Beethoven interpretations. This recording of the Piano Concerto No. 3, characterized by strong and forthright playing in the outer movements, is the first of three he set down in the studio. Arrau played Weber’s Konzertstück throughout his career. This 1946 recording is notable for its lightness and fleetness of execution. When reviewing the recital performance of Weber’s Piano Sonata No. 1, prior to the recording, Olin Downes wrote in The New York Times of Arrau’s ‘courtliness, wit, scintillation [and] chivalric flourish’.

Along with Casals’ 1927 London Symphony disc of Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture (Naxos Historical 8.110976), these recordings – the Beethoven Symphony No. 1 is particularly rare – constitute the cellist’s complete pre-war recordings as a conductor. The Barcelona sessions made with Casals’ own orchestra, formed in 1919, were set down in a concentrated period of work over five days in early July 1929. They are notable for their unfussy and direct approach to Beethoven that reveal the music in honest, unvarnished and expressive terms. In Brahms’ Variations on the St Anthony Chorale, recorded just a few weeks before Casals’ 51st birthday, the London Symphony Orchestra plays with beauty of sound, excellent ensemble and characterful wind solos. Casals’ temperate direction stresses the lyrical and eloquent aspects of Brahms’ writing.

Described by Nathan Milstein as ‘the greatest American-trained violinist’, Joseph Fuchs had an immensely long career, continuing to give recitals at Carnegie Hall until he was 93. He was a soloist with every major American orchestra and made many important recordings, including the concertos by Hindemith and Vaughan Williams, as well as Mozart’s G major and Sinfonia concertante. For many years Fuchs had a duo with the pianist Artur Balsam with whom he made several recordings, including the Beethoven Violin Sonatas of which this disc forms the first of three volumes. Apart from being the first complete cycle on the new vinyl medium, this one set a high standard in quality of both recording and performance. In his review of the original LP release in the December 21, 1952 New York Times Harold C Schonberg wrote: “Fuchs and Balsam make a magnificent team… Both instrumentalists scorn effects of a superficial nature and probe directly to the music’s bone. These are strong, powerful, thoughtful performances that have the added virtue of being technically impeccable”.

Visconti's sensational 1955 production of La sonnambula for La Scala, Milan, was revived and recorded two years later. As a girl, Callas had fallen in love with the rôle of Amina; as an adult it suited her voice perfectly, and her interpretation set a benchmark that few have equalled. Among the many highlights of Callas's profoundly satisfying performance is her cadenza for Ah non giunge in which she executes a remarkable diminuendo on a stratospheric E-flat, a feat unrivalled in the history of the gramophone. This is by any standards a classic recording.

Med dessa ord avslöjade den etablerade världstenoren Jussi Björling 1945 i sin självbiografi "Med bagaget i strupen" en pseudonym som huserade i Husbondens Rösts kataloger mellan februari 1932 och julen 1933. On its first release, this 1955 recording was praised as 'a worthy performance of the work and a well recorded one' by Gramophone, which also commented that 'Elisabeth Grümmer sings her solo with beautiful tone and deep feeling' and 'Fischer-Dieskau gives a[n] expressive and musical account of his part'. The choir and orchestra perform with measures of equal conviction, subtlety and power. Recognised as a 'musician's conductor', Rudolf Kempe was an outstanding interpreter of the German classics, always obtaining beautifully lucid playing allied to clarity of rhythm and sensitive phrasing.

If ‘slow tempos’ were a significant characteristic of Klemperer's final years as a conductor, in his earlier days, as demonstrated on these 1927-1928 recordings, he could set fizzing tempos, galvanising his performers with electric gestures. Above all, however, Klemperer was a master structuralist, always focused on the music, its construction and direction. His recording of the Brahms Symphony No. 1, made over seven months, is notable not only for athletic vitality but for ecstatic singing lines and subtle integration of light and shade. The account of the Prelude to Act I of Tristan und Isolde is remarkable rapt while that of Siegfried Idyll is intimate and gentle.

For all Karajan's glamorous lifestyle, it is no less often and widely reported - not least from his fellow musicians - that he was an exceptional conductor and a master of the orchestra. Karajan's war-time recordings took him to Berlin, Dresden and Turin and, in 1943, to Amsterdam to work with the highly renowned Concertgebouw Orchestra, a great orchestra then as now. This exciting account of Brahms's First Symphony, with its impeccable ensemble and intense, singing engagement with the music's linearity, more than holds its own alongside Karajan's four later recordings, made in London, Vienna and twice in Berlin. It is here coupled with a potent Leonore Overture No. 3, notable for its off-the-leash impetuosity, and a seductive and tension-filled excerpt from Salome.

If the most notable trait of this 1948 recording of Brahms' Second Symphony, Furtwängler's only commercial recording of the work, is the extreme variance of tempo, the composer's characteristically restless contrast of dynamism and lyricism is nevertheless placed firmly within a framework of the clearest realisation of form and symphonic development. The orchestra is audibly galvanised by Furtwängler's interpretative flexibility, which courses at white heat throughout the work. Another considerable asset is the recording quality achieved by the engineers in one of the most sought-after venues for orchestral music in England, Kingsway Hall in London. The wartime Telefunken recording of the second movement of Bruckner's Seventh Symphony is also Furtwängler's only commercial recording of the composer's music.

Although Furtwängler’s recorded legacy is extensive, recordings of concertos are relatively few. This 1949 recording of Brahms’ Violin Concerto is notable for the legendary conductor’s highly expressive accompaniment. In the Hungarian Dances Furtwängler’s innate understanding of their idiom brings a variety of subtleties and inflexions that make this recording particularly memorable. In Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture his structural strength of line, together with a natural fluidity of tempo underpinning the thematic imagery, strikes a perfect balance. Last but not least, the heart-warming performance of Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll demonstrates once again that even when Furtwängler conducted the lighter works of those composers whose output could be considered predominantly serious, he always brought the same questing spirit to search out the soul of the music.

Violinist Gioconda De Vito was a key figure in the renaissance of Italian string playing after 1945. With her broad phrasing, ample tone and generous vibrato, she excelled in performances of Brahms's Violin Concerto using Joachim's cadenza, as in this 1941 recording. The Manchester Guardian wrote of her 1949 recording of Mozart's G major Concerto: 'Every note was perfectly intoned and of individual life, yet as easefully and indivisibly belonging to the phrases of song as waves in a flowing sea...quite heavenly'.

Listening to Furtwängler’s performances from the postwar period is to participate in some of the most intense realisations of the repertoire he held most dear, including that of Brahms with whom he shared a consuming interest in the roots of their German musical heritage. Both in his writing and interpretative stance, Furtwängler sought to attain the heart of Brahms’s idiom through the imagery of its connections with nature. The introduction to the Finale of the First Symphony is an obvious case in point. Having wound down the tempo of the preceding movement using the tonal possibilities of Brahms’s instrumentation to reflect a decidedly autumnal sunset, Furtwängler allows the music to emerge as though from darkest night with the Finale’s horn-call resounding with all the warmth and reassurance of a shaft of morning sun breaking through the mists.

This radiant and justly famous 1947 recording of Brahms’ A German Requiem, a tribute to the composer’s mother who had died four years earlier, was the first complete studio version. It was made in Vienna two years after the end of World War II when the city was divided into four zones of occupation between the Allied powers, food was scarce and electrical power could be erratic. The result was a remarkable and poignant achievement by soloists, chorus and orchestra alike, working in extremely difficult circumstances and acutely aware of the meaning and relevance of the Lutheran sacred texts primarily intended to reconcile the living to their loss.

Heifetz's unequalled combination of silky legato, classically contained phrasing and technical dexterity found its perfect match in the Concertos of Max Bruch. The G minor recording was the first of two that he made with Sargent and it is, if anything, even finer in its lyric generosity than the 1962 remake. Bruch's Second Concerto and Spohr's Eighth were both recorded (as were the Beethoven Romances) in Hollywood, and are the violinist's only recordings of either work. He exhibits superb control of the former's long-breathed narrative, and of the latter's operatic intensity of expression.

GRAMOPHONE EDITOR'S CHOICE / REISSUE OF THE MONTH

Posterity has judged Alfred Cortot as one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century. His Naxos Historical recording of Chopin and Schumann Piano Concertos had him elevated in The Sunday Times as “The great French pianist famous for…. his magical touch and lovely singing tone and a flexibility of phrasing and movement as natural as breathing.”

This fourth disc in the Naxos five volume series devoted to his 78 rpm era recordings of Chopin includes three rarities: My Joys and the Polonaise-Fantasie, both unreleased on 78 rpm, and the first-ever CD appearance of the1933 version of the Piano Sonata No. 2. Completed in only fourteen takes on 6th July, this version of the Sonata has incredible energy, particularly in the last movement.

The stunning performance of the Grande Polonaise, Op. 22, demonstrates Cortot’s total understanding of Chopin’s use of the decorated melodic line. The popular Polonaise in A flat, Op. 53 is played with majestic swagger and pomp, aided by a well recorded Steinway piano.

This release is the first in a series devoted to Arthur Rubinstein's 'middle period' Chopin cycle, recorded from the mid-1940s through the mid-1950s. Long admired by Rubinstein aficionados, these interpretations (the pianist's second of both works) have been said to combine the fire and youthful exuberance of his 1930s recordings with the greater maturity and structural coherence that characterize his final stereo tapings. The 1946 Carnegie Hall recording of Concerto No. 2 boasts excellent sound quality due to the use of lacquer discs later transferred to tape for LP release.

This fourth instalment in the Naxos series of Rubinstein's middle period Chopin recordings (after the two Piano Concertos on 8.111296, the Polonaises on 8.111346 and the Waltzes and Impromptus on 8.111365) presents recordings from the two extreme ends of the period. The Sonata and Preludes were recorded in 1946 and first issued on 78 rpm discs, while the remaining selections were recorded on tape in 1957 and 1958. When the recording of the Preludes, Rubinstein's only commital of the work to disc, was issued in the UK in 1955, Gramophone declared: 'As a whole, this masterly performance is the best we have had so far of Chopin's great work'.

Image Polonaises
Arthur Rubinstein recorded the first seven Polonaises of Chopin three times. The fine performances heard here, from the middle period of his recording career, still stand as among the best, for Rubinstein was one of only a handful of pianists able to imbue these Polish works with such rhythm, nobility and vigour.'These impressive pieces are played with authority and a fine sense of their inner meaning and have been faithfully reproduced.' (The New Records, May 1952). Rubinstein's first, 1935/6 recording of the Polonaises is available on Naxos 8.110661.

Although Horowitz’s concept of Chopin, characterised by extremes of dynamics and tempi, divided the critics over the years, as one of them wrote in 1958 of a disc containing the Barcarolle heard here,‘If your choice in Chopin interpretation runs to largescale, grandiose treatments, magnificent panoramas of sound, delicacy and yet tremendous virility, obtain this record by all means. The overall effect is breathtaking.’ The tempo Horowitz chooses for the first movement of this 1950 recording of Piano Sonata No. 2 may seem surprisingly slow, yet the relationship between the first and second subject is far more logical than many performances where the second subject is often played much slower than the first. The 1949 recording of the Ballade No. 4 has never been reissued but is presented here for its rarity and in conjunction with the artist’s approved 1952 remake of the same work.

Image Waltzes & Impromptus
This volume continues the Naxos series of Rubinstein's 'middle period' Chopin recordings, begun with the Piano Concertos (8.111296) and followed by the Polonaises (8.111346). Because the HMV/Victor catalogue already included Cortot's complete traversal of the Waltzes (8.111035), Rubinstein set down only two of them on shellac before making this complete recording in 1954. He had made previous recordings for RCA of two of the Impromptus (Opp. 51 and 66) before taping the four new versions heard on this disc.

Benno Moiseiwitsch was born in Odessa, 'the cradle of Russian pianism', in 1890, and at the age of nine won the Anton Rubinstein prize. This third volume of his Chopin recordings covers a ten year period from the start of World War II, including two versions of the Barcarolle, one of which was unreleased on 78rpm. The pianist's exquisite singing tone is perfectly captured and he creates powerful and impassioned climaxes while never sacrificing his impeccable taste, style and elegance. As an appendix we include one of Moiseiwitsch's most famous recordings: the Scherzo from Mendelssohn's Midsummer Night's Dream arranged for solo piano by Rachmaninov.

Image 24 Preludes
This second volume of Moiseiwitsch’s Chopin recordings focuses on the complete Préludes, Op. 28, which the great pianist had attempted to record, unsuccessfully, with the acoustic process, and the Four Ballades. The recording of the complete Préludes is one of the most satisfactory on disc, as Moiseiwitsch captures perfectly the mood of each of these miniature masterpieces. The slower preludes in particular show Moiseiwitsch’s understanding of musical phrasing linked to harmonic progressions. In combination with his ideal projection of the singing line, this gives the impression that the music is a living and breathing entity. In the faster preludes, particularly No. 16 and No. 24, Moiseiwitsch never loses control of tempo or dynamics and the ornaments and figuration of the last Prélude become part of the organic whole. The recording of the Ballade No. 4, his only 78rpm recording of the work, derives from a test pressing.

Image Piano Sonata No. 2
Alfred Cortot was renowned above all as a pianist whose interpretations, especially of the works of Schumann, Debussy and Chopin, were often on a spiritual level. This 1953 performance of Chopin's Piano Sonata No. 2 is his fifth and final commercial recording of the work (the 1928 recording is available on Naxos 8.111065; the 1927 recording is unissued). Cortot wanted to record the work again partly because he felt his interpretation would be 'an example for the young pianists, who are so little imbued with the Romantic spirit'. His 1953 and third recording of Schumann's Kinderszenen is notable for the familiar singing tone and poetic warmth he brings to Kind im Einschlummern (Child falling asleep) and Der Dichter spricht (The poet speaks). Cortot's interpretation of the youthful romanticism of Carnaval is full of colour and character, far preferable to bland and uninspired subsequent accounts from lesser pianists.

(Svenska Dagbladet)

Rachmaninov's formidable piano technique was notable for its precision, rhythmic drive, refined legato, crystalline clarity and sensitivity to melodic line. While avoiding sentimentality, he sought and expressed music's emotional essence. Though fleet fingered, he had, in Arthur Rubinstein's words, "the secret of the golden, living tone which comes from the heart", awing listeners with the aristocratic quality of his playing. This is particularly evident in his interpretations of Chopin, Schumann and Liszt, whose great Romantic spirit matched his own. Even today, his recordings remain classics.

Ranked among the most insightful of pianists for his exploration of the spiritual depths of the music he interpreted, Alfred Cortot was a multi-faceted musician with a wide-ranging repertoire. This album couples small treasures such as the four miniatures by Purcell and Bach's transcription of a Vivaldi Concerto, with masterpieces by Mendelssohn and Franck, of whose music Cortot was one of the greatest exponents. In Cortot's hands, even Saint-Saëns's technically demanding Étude en forme de Valse poses no obstacles to his enviable lightness of touch.

This collection brings together Alfred Cortot’s complete electrical recordings for the Victor Talking Machine Company. Of special interest to collectors are the March 1925 recordings of the second half of Chopin’s G minor Ballade, which here receives its first CD release outside Japan, and Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 11, transferred for this Naxos release from a vinyl test pressing for the unissued twelveinch 78rpm. All these early electrical recordings are notable not only for the improved quality of sound, but for the way the microphone captured Cortot’s huge palette of tonal colours, on a Steinway piano rather than his preferred Pleyel. As a critic wrote after Cortot’s 5th January 1927 recital at New York’s Aeolian Hall: ‘He is one of those great musicians from whose readings of familiar works there is almost invariably something to learn and remember… it would be hard to surpass his sincerity, his feeling, his colouring, and declamation of the music. Nor are many as fortunate as he in striking the mean between what is nobly expressive and what is sentimental….’

Image Ballades/Nocturnes
• As with previous discs, this fifth and final release in the Naxos series of Cortot’s 78 rpm era Chopin recordings includes versions of recordings which have not been reissued often, if at all. The 1929 set of Ballades, which emerge from Cortot’s hands with all the passion and emotion, poetry and tenderness that were the hallmark of his playing, has been chosen over the more familiar 1933 remake.

• The 1949 re-recording of the Nocturne Op. 9, No. 2 has not previously been available on CD outside of Japan. Cortot’s phrasing, colourful tonal palette and singing tone in the F major and C sharp minor Nocturnes are without equal, while the dramatic middle sections of these works explode in anguish or ecstasy.

• Posterity has judged Alfred Cortot as one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century. His Naxos Historical recording of Chopin and Schumann Piano Concertos had him elevated in The Sunday Times as “The great French pianist famous for…. his magical touch and lovely singing tone and a flexibility of phrasing and movement as natural as breathing.”

The RCA Victor recording of Raffaello de Banfield's 1955 opera Lord Byron's Love Letter is a true rarity, remaining in their catalogue for only a short time and never reissued on CD before now. Based on a Tennessee Williams play set in late 19th-century New Orleans during the Mardi Gras, it revolves around an eccentric old lady, lost in the past, who displays to visitors an old love letter for money, purportedly by the rakish English poet. The opera was praised by Time magazine for its 'vocal beauty'.

Reissue Producer and Audio Restoration Engineer: Mark Obert-Thorn

It is not surprising that Lipatti achieved cult status in the years following his death at the age of 33. He was an extremely sensitive musician and a man whose approach to the piano was one of utter fastidiousness, always striving for perfection in every aspect of his interpretation and performance. Throughout this Besançon recital there is a clarity of sound, evenness of attack and scrupulous attention to gradation of dynamics, characteristic hallmarks of Lipatti's playing. The fourteen Chopin Waltzes are played in the order that Lipatti chose for performance but, according to his wife, he was too physically weak to play the last Waltz in A flat, Op. 34 No. 1, so it is included here from his commercial recording of a few months before.

For almost forty years the name of Václav Talich was synonymous with the great orchestra he conducted, the Czech Philharmonic. When he made these records in November 1935, he was at the height of his career as the most charismatic Czech conductor in history. The orchestra's autumn London visits, beginning in 1935, were eagerly awaited events, not least by the HMV technicians at Abbey Road Studios, where the art of 78rpm recording had been brought to its peak. The Slavonic Dances give Talich the chance to show the full panoply of his skills in subtlety of rhythm and orchestral colour. In Carnival, the strings' natural portamento lends lovely curves to the second theme, while in the quiet interlude the delicately rustic Czech woodwinds come into their own. Talich was to return to all this music in the 1950s but these 1935 recordings catch an immortal partnership in full flood and vigour.

There is an outgoing spontaneity, a pearly tone and absence of sophistication that appeal to the heart of the listener and that today’s singers find hard to emulate”. Gramophone on 8.110731

The Flagello brothers combined their remarkable musical talents to create the unique artistic synergy of these recordings. Ezio's career flourished at the Metropolitan Opera and abroad, and composer Nicolas made good use of his rich bass-baritone voice in luxuriant settings of Tennyson's verses in The Land, here partnered with Leopardi's L'Infinito, a gloomy expression of humility and awe in the face of the Infinite. The texts used in the Passion of Martin Luther King emphasize faith, endurance and brotherly love, and this previously unissued première recording restores the moving original version of the work, with Dr King's "Dream" re-asserted through Ezio Flagello's towering performance as soloist.

Fritz Kreisler, violin and others

The years 1919-24 saw Fritz Kreisler re-establish himself after the First World War. Initial hostility to him in America was eventually overcome, and the resumption of his recording schedule saw a steady stream of inimitable offerings from the most beloved violinist of the time. There are rarities in this sequence of acoustic sides, not least his recording of black American Clarence Cameron White's spiritual setting and an elusive 1921 recording of Charles Dawes's Melody in A. Additionally, Kreisler never rerecorded his beautiful performance of his own Aucassin and Nicolette.

The 1916-19 period saw Fritz Kreisler at his peak as an artist, although the shadow cast by America's entrance to World War One in 1917 forced him to cancel numerous concerts. The improved fidelity possible by 1916 saw Kreisler making substitutes of his earlier American recordings, including his own Liebesfreud. Amongst an abundance of technical marvels, Kreisler's superb 'parlando' bowing is demonstrated in Granados's Spanish Dance. The string quartet recordings include a fine Andante cantabile by Tchaikovsky, and persuasive performances with small orchestra in 1917 include Beautiful Ohio which would later be adopted as the state's official song. After the Armistice, Kreisler was able to return to the studio in 1919 for showcase works such as Valdez's Sérénade du Tzigane.

When Fritz Kreisler made his first London recordings towards the end of 1911, he was already wildly popular in Britain. He was equally busy in Berlin and Vienna and visited the United States on occasion. Here is a chance to enjoy light music making of a high order from an era long before the birth of 'historically informed' performance practice. Alongside favourites such as Tchaikovsky's Chant sans paroles are recordings of Kreisler's own compositions, as well as alternative takes and duplications explained by the HMV and Victor engineers' constant striving to improve on the sound quality of popular pieces such as Liebesleid and Liebesfreud.

Fritz Kreisler is often represented as an indolent charmer, yet it is clear that his vast acclaim was founded on a great deal of hard work in both the concert hall (at the start of the 1913-14 season the great violinist had 90 American concerts scheduled over five and a half months) and the studio, where long sessions were not uncommon. For the main work on this album of American recordings made at the time of the Great War, Bach's Double Concerto in D minor (slightly abridged so as to fit on three 78rpm sides), Kreisler is joined by the Russian violinist Efrem Zimbalist. The Appendix features three tracks with soprano Geraldine Farrar and the only surviving recording of Kreisler-as-pianist, playing Dvorák's Humoresque.

Fritz Kreisler sold millions of records and gave pleasure to listeners around the world who could never hear him perform live. This disc brings together recordings made in 1904 and 1910 which, despite the recording industry's infancy and the extraordinary limitations placed on the musicians, are amazingly good in both artistic and technical terms. Alongside several beloved favourites such as Bach's Air on the G String are several recordings of Kreisler's own popular compositions, and alternative takes of several musical bon-bons.

Image Ghedini conducts Ghedini
One of the finest Italian composers of the 20th century, Giorgio Federico Ghedini was almost 35 when his Litanie alla Vergine received what he described as a 'warm welcome from the public, unreserved praise from all the critics and musicians'. Ghedini's very individual orchestration of J. S. Bach's Musical Offering is notable for its use of a variety of small, usually homogeneous groups from within an orchestra including two pianos but no horns. L'Olmeneta (The Elm Grove) of 1951 is a fascinating concerto for orchestra and two concertante cellos which Ghedini felt were like two complementary herbs, the red Glaspi and the white Egusa, growing far apart but with roots intertwining underground. At the heart of the concerto lies a haunting, yearning, almost Mahlerian slow movement. Reissued here for the first time in more than 50 years, these are the only known surviving recordings of Ghedini conducting his own music.

• This final volume of the Naxos Gigli Edition, released to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the great tenor’s death, is taken from his Carnegie Hall farewell concerts in April, 1955.

• Making their first appearance on CD here, these recordings demonstrate that Gigli remained to the end his old, communicative self, still able to pour an immense tranche of emotion into whatever he was singing. For a man his age the overall sound is still remarkable and the honeyed mezza-voce remains a delight, untouched by the passing years. As ever in a Gigli programme, operatic titles are intertwined with more popular material.

• By and large Gigli kept faith with those pieces he most enjoyed singing and that his public adored. ‘It was only through my audiences that this exercise of lungs, diaphragm and vocal cords became transmuted for me into a profound spiritual experience. Like a squirrel counting his hoard of nuts in the winter, I treasure their applause in my memory.’

Image The Best of Gilbert & Sullivan
Whilst William Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan were both respected in their own right and during their own time, Gilbert as a playwright and Sullivan as a composer, their collaboration under the management of D’Oyly Carte proved an inspired combination in the late Victorian period. Gilbert’s fantastical plots together with Sullivan’s inventive settings have come to epitomise much of what we consider to be British culture in the 19th century. Indeed, so great was this institution that The D’Oyly Carte Opera Company is still performing the operettas of Gilbert and Sullivan today, and so are many other companies, both amateur and professional. These excerpts, from 1948–1954, are recorded as they were originally intended, in the great tradition of The D’Oyly Carte Opera Company.

Emil Gilels was one of the greatest Russian pianists of the twentieth century, born in Odessa in 1916. The recordings on this first disc of his early recordings, made in the USSR, come from the first stage of Gilels's career and include his first known recordings from 1935. Leopold Godowsky's arrangement of the Gigue by Jean-Baptiste Loeillet immediately shows the immense power the nineteen-year old Gilels had at the keyboard. His playing, especially in his youth, was fiery, volatile and exciting, and even late in his career it still retained the grandeur and sweep of a great master in the Russian tradition.

Image Andrea Chénier
"Andrea Chenier is a singer's opera. The tenor has no less than four arias, nicely paced over four acts. The baritone has two big set pieces, Nemico della patria being a real showstopper. The 'poor' soprano is assigned only one, La Mamma morta, but she gets two extended duets and chews scenery while the tenor and baritone work hard to earn their fees. Even a cameo role like the blind woman Madelon, often assigned to superannuated former divas, gets a moment in the sun. With the whole wrapped up in the best verismo tradition, it's no wonder this 'blood and guts' piece has lasting audience appeal. This Naxos release of a seventy-year old performance scores on all counts. Originally issued on Italian Columbia, it features a very young Lina Bruna-Rasa as Maddalena. She pulls no punches vocally nor dramatically, offering up searing high notes and a generous chest register. Carlo Galeffi, a noted baritone with a warm, mellow sound, is a superlative Gerard. Compared with these two powerhouses, tenor Luigi Marini as Chenier is less pronounced, singing correctly and without exaggeration, but with clarion power and heroic heft when required. Also notable is the Roucher of the great character baritone Salvatore Baccaloni. ...As a bonus, Naxos has included seven additional arias by Bruna-Rasa, recorded three years earlier."

Over four days of sessions in Hollywood during 1946 and 1947, Jascha Heifetz and his regular accompanist Emanuel Bay recorded this evocative series of encores. The repertoire was wide-ranging, and included three Spanish pieces by Sarasate, Nin and Ernesto Halffter, all delectably played, in his only recordings of them. He turned also to his own transcription of Bax's Mediterranean as well as to staples such as Rimsky-Korsakov's dazzling Flight of The Bumble-Bee. Throughout, Heifetz's bowing, pizzicati, double stops, glissandi and inimitable portamenti grace these pieces with incredible freshness.

During 1943-44 Jascha Heifetz toured widely, entertaining US troops with popular repertoire as well as that of the great classical composers. Returning to turmoil in the recording industry, Heifetz worked briefly for Decca rather than RCA, recording hits such as Jamaican Rumba and his own superb arrangements of Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, as well as collaborating with Bing Crosby. He performed this lighter music with all of the precision and passion he invested in major masterpieces. As Heifetz himself once said: 'There are only two kinds of music-good music and bad music.' This is the first of two newly re-mastered discs which preserve a unique and timelessly magical moment in musical history.

Heifetz's series of arrangements and transcriptions for violin and piano reveal just how tasteful and refined a musician he was. Crafted with precision, and played with passion, they are alive with his stylistic awareness. Whether in his Rachmaninov transcriptions or in Robert Russell Bennett's A Song Sonata, Heifetz lavished equal care on these gems and they enriched his concert programmes. They also proved hugely popular on disc-thirteen pieces come from a 1960 LP famously called 'Heifetz'-and their variety, virtuosity and sheer beauty remain imperishable examples of the art of the violin.

Aware of the need for lighter music while touring for the US troops, Heifetz nonetheless refused to play down to his audiences, praising the G.I.s' 'interest in good music'. This more classical programme represents the violinist's staggering virtuosity and range, from a spectacular paraphrase of Rossini's The Barber of Seville to the lyrical expressiveness of Saint-Saëns's The Swan. Of the many singers who bridged the musical worlds of the Victorian era and the twentieth century, John McCormack was the most versatile, the most adventurous and the most modern. The excerpts from Aida, Rigoletto and La Traviata demonstrate that McCormack, with his clear, clarion delivery, was an exceptional Verdi tenor. In the selections from Victorian operas by Balfe, Benedict and Wallace, McCormack is the master of florid vocalism and the seamless line. The popular Irish and Irish-American songs are sung with a level of artistry and musical imagination that transcends their humble origins. With Luigi Denza’s Funiculì, funiculà we are returned to the threshold moment in McCormack’s career when the Italian composer adjudicated the 1903 Dublin Feis Ceoil music competition and awarded McCormack the gold medal – the beginning of one of the great musical careers of the twentieth century.

The tracks include Victorian ballads, Italianate songs (a hybrid English parlour ballad placed in a classic Italian setting with all the elements of the genre, from the moon to the lagoon), Celtic songs, Continental songs with a Viennese flavour, and American songs such as The Vacant Chair which commemorates the death of a young Union Army lieutenant during the American Civil War, as well as ending on a D flat above high C, the highest note McCormack ever recorded. The one operatic item, Il mio tesoro from Don Giovanni, is a supreme performance of one of Mozart’s most demanding arias and the last published recording from McCormack’s operatic repertoire.

With a high-lying voice ideally suited to the microphone and a natural musical ability of the highest calibre, Schmidt triumphed over unhappy personal and political circumstances to leave a precious legacy of recordings.
