Palestrina's 104 Masses and 177 motets make him the most prolific and consistent composer of the Counter-Reformation, and yet until this century his reputation has remained firm almost exclusively because of one Mass, the Missa Papae Marcelli, and the legends surrounding it. Published in 1567, the Mass was dedicated to Pope Marcellus II, who reigned for a mere three weeks in 1555, and seems in part to have been a contribution to the debate over the function of polyphony in the changing Roman Catholic liturgy. Extremists at the Council of Trent wanted polyphony, with its sometimes scant regard for textual clarity, banned in favour of plainsong, but the final injunctions of the Council warned only against everything "impure or lascivious" in the music. Palestrina's nineteenth century biographer Baini attributed the reason for this to his hero's Missa Papae Marcelli, with its settings of the Gloria and Credo, which are chordal and declamatory rather than thickly woven. It has been suggested that the Missa Papae Marcelli was subversive of the Council's dictates in a subtler way. It was a long-established practice to base Masses on anything from sacred motets to bawdy chansons. Reformers were keen that worshippers' ears should no longer be tickled by quotations from secular song, and yet the themes of the Missa Papae Marcelli bear a dangerous resemblance to that most popular of medieval songs, L 'homme anne. If this was the snub to authority some say it was, it is just another tribute to Palestrina's genius in unifying the movements of a Mass through continuous and methodical development of his initial theme. There is no such doubt about the basis of Palestrina's Missa Aeterna Christi munera, which takes material from the plainsong hymn of the same name. Although a later work -it was published in 1590 - its four-part scoring and relatively straightforward exposition of the hymn-tune demonstrates Palestrina in more conservative spirit. Here are the most representative aspects of his style - the smooth, eminently singable lines, the unchallenging harmonies and his resourcefulness with smaller textures, such as in the near perfect three-part Benedictus. Most of all, Palestrina's settings embody the archaic, dogmatic completeness of Counter-Reformation Catholicism, making him a supreme musical theologian. The Stabat mater is a miniature on a grand scale and remains one of Palestrina's best-loved works. The hypnotic harmonies are overtly modal thereby giving a distinctly nostalgic air to the word painting. This still life of the Virgin Mary gazing upon the body of her crucified Son is amongst the most potent and touching portraits of the late Renaissance. The humanistic ideal of the ability of great art to redeem the human soul is perfectly achieved in Palestrina's setting of the text. Trained as a chorister in Rome from the age of nine, Gregorio Allegri continued as a singer in Rome and at Fermo and Tivoli. In 1628 he became maestro di cappella at the church of Santo spirito in sassia in Rome and from 1630 he was a singer in the papal chapel of Pope Urban VIII. His best known composition for the papal choir is his nine-part Miserere, a psalm-setting customarily performed by the choir in Holy Week. The work remained the exclusive property of the papal choir and was copied out from memory by Mozart, when he heard the work sung in Rome in 1770. Three years later Dr. Burney took a copy of the Miserere, with other music of the chapel, during the course of his extended investigative journey through Europe.

The sixteenth-century Leipzig organist Elias Nicolaus Ammerbach is remembered above all for his Tabulaturbuch, a collection of keyboard arrangements of songs, dances and other works, variously ornamented, and intended as a means of teaching both keyboard-playing and the foundations of music. He is one of the 16th century German ‘colourists’, who added virtuoso passage-work to pre-existing works.

Now enjoying cult status since her 're-discovery' 25 years ago, Hildegard von Bingen, the tenth child of an aristocratic family, entered a convent at the age of eight and spent the remainder of her eighty years as a nun as well as a mystic, the latter half as abbess of her own convent. Hildegard's great musico-poetic collection was completed around the year 1150. Symphonia armonie celestium revelationum (Symphony of the Harmony of Heavenly Revelations) is a collection of 77 songs and one music drama. The subjects of these songs are an idiosyncratic collection of individuals and groups - the pieces included on this recording are variously addressed to the Creator, the Redeemer, the Blessed Virgin Mary, St John the Evangelist, Apostles, Confessors, and Martyrs.

He served as master of choristers at Notre Dame in Paris and then was employed at the d’Este court in Ferrara, where he succeeded Obrecht. After the disbandment of the court chapel Brumel may have spent time in Rome, where it is thought his Missa de Beata Virgine, his most famous composition, may have been written.

The fantasia was in the process of being adapted for keyboard from lute and consort music during William Byrd's youth, and his formidable mastery of counterpoint brought the form to a pinnacle equivalent to his matchless vocal works. These splendours combine with lively dances and virtuoso display and quotations from songs of love and death. They also may hold fascinating symbols which mark secret Catholic allegiances, a gift for Elizabeth I, and a memorial to the tragic Mary, Queen of Scots. Our cover image shows the only possible contemporary impression of Byrd, as a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal at the funeral of Elizabeth I.

My Ladye Nevells Booke is a collection of 42 keyboard pieces by the greatest English composer of his day, William Byrd. It includes dances, variations, contrapuntal fancies and battle-pieces, and was compiled seemingly from the composer’s manuscripts for Lady Nevell, half-sister of Francis Bacon and third wife of Sir Henry Nevell of Billingbere, who was her second husband. The volume, dated 1591 and handsomely bound, was acquired by the British Library in 2006. It constitutes a significant monument to Byrd’s achievement as a composer for the virginals.

"El ciego tañedor" or "the blind keyboardist", Antonio de Cabezón was one of the most inspired masters of his day and a protégé at the court of King Philip II (whose favourite painting, reproduced on the cover of the booklet, came into his possession while Cabezón was with him in Brussels in 1555). Keyboard music was attaining a status equal to vocal polyphony at this time, and Cabezón's sophisticated Tientos are at the forefront of a rapid rise in a new intensity of expression. Where the Tientos relate to vocal styles the Variations can frequently be traced to popular songs and dance tunes such as the Folía.

Image Best of Dowland, The
The Renaissance composer John Dowland (1563-1626) was the foremost lutenist and lute song composer of his generation. While renowned as the master of musical melancholy, he was reputedly a cheerful man, though disappointed by his long failure to find employment at the English court. Dowland penned some of the most enduringly beautiful music of his age, his subtly masterful songs, lute pieces and consort music retaining their freshness and emotional power almost four centuries after his death.

• The pre-eminent lutenist of his day, John Dowland was almost an exact contemporary of William Shakespeare. This second volume of his complete lute music (Volume One is available on Naxos 8.557586) includes perhaps his best-known work, the Lachrimae Pavan. This melancholic work became the most popular pavan of its age, a model for all pavans and was a central piece in the Elizabethan lute repertoire.

• The closing pavan based on the composer’s motto Semper Dowland Semper Dolens (Dowland is always doleful) is full of exquisitely restless harmonies and quotations from the composer’s songs.

• This second volume is delivered by Nigel North, who was so successful in his performances in Volume 1: “The prospect of a Nigel North set is something to drool over, and this first instalment doesn’t disappoint… North is steeped in the music – and technically beyond reproach….You’re in the presence of elevated music making indeed.” BBC Music Magazine

Glen Wilson, harpsichord

Andrea Gabrieli, uncle and mentor to the unjustly more famous Giovanni, was the first true genius of the Italian keyboard school. Besides an important corpus of vocal music, this organist of San Marco composed complex monothematic ricercars, turning the form into the ancestor of the fugue; as well as brilliant preambula and toccatas, gorgeously ornamented arrangements of madrigals and chansons, and a sparking passamezzo. Glen Wilson performs a selection of these on copies of a 16th-century Italian harpsichord and spinetta.

Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa, became famous for two reasons: the bloody double murder of his first wife and her lover and his passionate and erotic view of profane love. Brimming with often astonishing and sometimes unpredictable melodic and tonal contrasts to express the agonies and ecstasies of love, Gesualdo's Madrigals show him to have been one of the most inventive and eccentric musical minds of his age. Gesualdo's Second Book of Madrigals, performed on this recording by male voices only, is an even more radical study of the themes explored in Volume 1 (8.570548), a continuation as it were of the same work. Like Book 1, it was published in 1594 in Ferrara during the preparations for Gesualdo's second wedding, and demonstrates his ability to treat the poetic word as a source of musical ideas. The last two tracks present Gesualdo's only two instrumental compositions. 'Delitiæ Musicæ's survey of Monteverdi's madrigals for Naxos was an outstanding achievement, as good as any versions in the current CD catalogue.' (The Guardian)

Book Three of Gesualdo's Madrigals was published in 1595 and marked a strong change in his style. Rejecting leading poets of the time, Gesualdo preferred to set little known or indeed anonymous writers in order to evoke pathos and huge drama. This is now music of uncompromising directness and intensity, calling on the resources of dissonance and contrast, and using texts for their full expressive potential. Both previous issues in this series have received high accolades, the first, for example [8.570548], being full of "expression, style, heartfelt pulse, and imagination" (American Record Guide).

Gesualdo's Fourth Book of Madrigals contains some of the most inspired and anguished vocal works in the entire madrigal repertoire, written while the composer was tormented by remorse after the murder of his wife and her lover. This collection is filled with technical innovation and extremes of expressiveness in its setting of highly dramatic texts. Unexpected dissonance, harmonic twists and elusive asymmetries all serve to dismantle the compositional rules of the period. Previous volumes in this series have been widely acclaimed. The Guardian described Book 2 (8.570549) as having "great beauty and lyrical force".

Gesualdo returns to themes of love and rejection, death and suffering, joy and sorrow; creating music which has the power to surprise and enthrall anyone who hears it. A member of the Habsburg-Burgundian chapel, he composed polyphony for all the major liturgical genres. This is the first recording of La Rue’s seven surviving Magnificats as well as three of his six settings of the Salve Regina, one of which quotes chansons by Dufay and Binchois. Varied voicing, surprising tonal relationships and contrasting textures make each setting distinct. La Rue’s mastery of old and new musical styles endows these pieces with great expressive force.

Although biographical details of his life remain sketchy, Luys Milán's
Libro de música de vihuela de mano intitulado El Maestro is certainly
the oldest surviving printed collection of vihuela music. Tuned like
the contemporary Renaissance lute, the Spanish vihuela is a guitarshaped
instrument and for it Milán wrote a series of compelling works
including fantasias and pavans that maturely fused improvisatory and
polyphonic elements. This recording presents all the solo vihuela
pieces from the first book of El Maestro in the order in which they
appear.

• Monteverdi’s Sixth Book of Madrigals, which appeared nine years after his previous volume, was conceived as his final, though highly significant contribution to the stile antico.

• Two masterpieces within Book Six show that the traditional five-part madrigal was still a force to be reckoned: the Sestina, Monteverdi’s heartrending tribute to his wife, who had died in 1607, and the Lamento d’Arianna, a polyphonic transcription of his best-known solo operatic piece.

• The 1623 solo version of the Lamento can also be heard on this CD, as well as twelve rarely performed madrigals published between 1593 and 1634.

The 'Concerto' (as Claudio Monteverdi entitled his Seventh Book of Madrigals) was published five years after the Sixth Book had appeared. It represents a clear break with Monteverdi's earlier publications: here the madrigal is transformed or, perhaps, it would be better to say it has vanished, at least in the form that would have been recognised up to that point. Of 32 compositions there is not a single fivevoice madrigal, only pieces for one to four voices, all with basso continuo, some with violins, along with works that might be called 'experimental'. It was the heterogeneous nature of this collection that led Monteverdi to use the title 'Concerto'. Marco Longhini's new complete critical edition, the first since Malipiero's 1932 edition, was prepared specifically for this recording.

Neidhart was one of the most popular Minnesingers - or "poet-musicians" - of the late Middle Ages. His songs deal with rustic, erotic and violent topics mediated, however, through court culture, which gives them a stylised, ironic sense of detachment.

His division of songs into "summer" or "winter" adds another layer of complexity, with melancholy or dance-orientated topics prevailing, depending on the season. The instrumental music carries a rural character. The "Frankfurt Fragment" manuscript has never been recorded in full, and is here performed by one of the most outstanding ensembles in the field.

Palestrina's Fourth Book of Motets was dedicated to his patron Pope Gregory XIII and published in Rome in 1584. He took as his text The Song of Songs (also known as The Song of Solomon). The 29 motets, written in an age of religious tumult and Counter- Reformation, evoke the love of Christ in devotional music of chamber-like refinement and joy. This recording also includes plainchant antiphons related to the texts, and the motets Afferentur Regi and Quam pulchri sunt gressus tui.

This recording aims to provide Robert Parsons, who died tragically in his forties, with a memorial service he never received and aid his return to a place alongside the greatest English Renaissance composers. Movements from the First Great Service, scored for two antiphonal choirs, provide the core of this ‘remembrance service’ for Robert Parsons. In scale and polyphonic grandeur the work maintains the old Catholic tradition, while making use of the new Protestant liturgy with its revolutionary setting of the 1549 English texts. Interspersed between movements of the First Great Service are a number of pieces taken from the Responds for the Dead, set to Latin texts. The Magnificat, which opens this recording, is the largest-scale single work that Parsons wrote.

Peter Philips was the most famous English composer of his time, and only Byrd, a generation older, had more compositions published. Much of Philips's life was spent on the Continent, where he wrote music of intricate, text-conscious colour, both deeply expressive and architecturally powerful. His motets and anthems, whether celebratory, meditative or dramatic, embrace the widest range of feeling and texture. The much-admired Sarum Consort's disc All the Queen's Men (8.572582) was praised for its 'energy and aplomb'. (American Record Guide)

Though he lived through some of the most tumultuous times in English history, from the reigns of Henry VII to Elizabeth I, Thomas Tallis (c. 1505-1585) composed music for both the Catholic and Anglican churches that resounds the world over to this day. Whether singing the monumental splendour of his famous 40-part motet Spem in alium or the intimate prayer I call and cry to thee, O Lord, the internationally renowned Oxford Camerata conducted by Jeremy Summerly are perfectly attuned to Tallis's timeless genius.

Ensemble Cosmedin

Anima mea explores the Christian concept of the soul through these masterpieces of medieval Sacred Music. Hildegard of Bingen's beautifully exalted harmonies represent God's order in the music of the spheres. The recently rediscovered Erfurt Ritual contains sung music from Master Eckhart's historical context. These antiphons are performed here for the first time since 1525, along with chants from the liturgy of the Roman mass, music from the Notre Dame School, and a glorious Magnificat. The German duo Ensemble Cosmedin, who take their name from a church in Rome, are considered one of the leading ensembles for medieval and modern sacred music. Music of the soul-gentle and luminous.

Andrea Antico was a printer from Dalmatia who obtained, through the first Medici Pope, Leo X, a monopoly on printing keyboard music. His 1517 collection of frottole - a quasi-rustic word meaning a deceitful, silly story - contains highly advanced, but textually corrupt arrangements of part-songs for keyboard made by an anonymous musician. This world première recording of the complete Frottole Intabulate incorporates a new edition by harpsichordist Glen Wilson.

The period of the early Habsburgs, from c.1340 to c.1520, saw the development of a richly diverse musical culture in the Austrian region. This pioneering selection, the product of an extensive research project conducted at the University of Vienna, presents an overview of music in everyday life, in many cases in première recordings performed by Ensemble Leones.

The music is sacred and secular, allowing the listener to eavesdrop on Tyrolean palaces, dance halls and bourgeois homes, and on the singer-poets who travelled the country where old local styles fused with the latest international fashions.

This recording presents the chorale variations for solo viola da gamba by an anonymous 17th-century master, collected in the so-called Berlin Gamba Book. Dietmar Berger's recording of the Manchester Gamba Book (8.572863-64) was acclaimed as 'a considerable achievement by any standard' (Gramophone).

Ferdinando Richardson was a remarkable figure in the history of English music. As Groom of the Privy Chamber he held one of the most prestigious political offices at the court of Elizabeth I and is thought to have overseen the compilation of the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book. The outstanding virtuosity of his few surviving works suggests not only that he himself was a supremely accomplished performer but that his music embodies the best qualities of his probable teachers, Thomas Tallis and John Bull. This recording concludes with a fascinating selection of rare works by his contemporaries.

The collection also includes several pieces known as 'Schwanz' (tail), which probably designates them as dances ('schwanzen' being a derivation of 'tanzen', ie dancing). The music sung or played in this Lower Silesian monastic community originated in many different countries, but all the pieces show a richly developed standard. Sephardic music, from the ancient domain of al-Andalus (Andalusia), lies at the heart of of this selection of songs in remembrance of a lost homeland. The word endechar comes from a time before the expulsion of the Jews and their culture from Spain in 1492; within the Jewish community it meant 'to sing funeral dirges' or 'to lament'. After leaving Spain, the Sephardim kept alive the tradition of singing endechas (laments), romances (narrative ballads), and other songs in their traditional language, ladino, or Judaeo-Spanish, which was based on ancient Castilian. This was enriched by the addition of words from Hebrew and then from the languages, music and instruments of the places to which they travelled, such as Greece, the Balkans, Turkey and Morocco.

Set to vernacular texts dealing mainly with the theme of love, frottole were short, improvisatory polyphonic songs with instrumental accompaniment that flourished in the Renaissance courts of Italy for some forty years between c. 1480 and 1520. Despite its apparent simplicity, this completely new genre of song inspired some of Europe's greatest vocal and instrumental musicians. The recent invention of movable type added further to its popularity. This recording explores a representative selection, including work published by the historically pivotal figure of Ottaviano Petrucci.

Schola Antiqua of Chicago • Michael Alan Anderson

This collection of early music for the Advent season provides a glimpse into the days of anticipation and hope leading up to Christmas during the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Pierre de La Rue spent his professional life serving some of the most influential rulers of that time, and the glorious polyphony of his Missa Conceptio tua celebrates the Immaculate Conception in a manner appropriate to the extravagant liturgy of the Habsburg-Burgundian court. The seven O Antiphons focus on the theme of Jesus's imminent arrival, while the concluding English carols centre on the Virgin Mary's birth of the Christ child.

The Holy Grail has occupied a central place in Western life. It was believed by many to have been used by Christ at the Last Supper, and in the middle ages writers saw the Grail as a dish, or a chalice, or a precious stone. Songs and instrumental music celebrated its mystical power and were composed by some of the greatest troubadours, mystics and singer-poets of the age: Chrétien de Troyes, Walther von der Vogelweide, Wolfram von Eschenbach, and Hildegard of Bingen. This disc uniquely focuses on the common threads between Grail literature and music.

Image Psaumes de la Réforme - Psalms for the Reformation
The French Reformed Psalter consists of paraphrases of the Psalms of David made by Clément Marot and Théodore de Bèze in the sixteenth century and set to Gregorian melodies and to melodies secular or unpublished, adapted or harmonized. More than a purely functional collection, the Huguenot Psalter is a powerful vehicle of the Protestant faith. It clarified theological, musical and aesthetic questions of the Renaissance and exercised an undeniable influence on the music of the period.

Claude Goudimel (1520-1572), who harmonized the Psalter, was the composer of a monumental work which contains several levels of composition. First the note against note psalm, easy to perform and intended to be sung by everyone, then a more contrapuntal psalm, more ornamented, and finally the psalm in the form of a motet, full of symbolism (Psalms XIII, CXXVIII and CIV) and treating each verse of the complete text. The juxtaposition of these three types of setting demonstrates the great art of this French master, whose life was dramatically cut short at the Massacre of St. Bartholomew. Paschal de l'Estoquart and Jan Pieterzoon Sweelinck contributed to the development of the genre into the seventeenth century, with an ornate contrapuntal musical language more clearly instrumental (Psalm XXV) and making a more spectacular use of voices (Psalm CIV).

Meditative prayers of petition, penitential appeals to God in distress, are found in Psalms XIII, CLXIII and CXXX. The argument of Psalm CXXX is translated by Clément Marot: Deeply felt prayer of one who, through his sin, is in great adversity and nevertheless, through his firm hope, seeks to obtain from God remission of his sins and deliverance from evil.

Psalms of praise, acknowledgement of the creation, Psalms XXV, XXXIII, CIV, CVII and CXXVIII, rely on stirring melodies and are recognisable from their great number: It is a fine hymn in which the prophet invites praise of the Almighty...(Psalm XXXIII); The deliverance of Israel out of Egypt...; Canticle of the priests, Levites and singers of Jerusalem, captive in Babylon. The third category of this group of psalms, Psalms CXIV and CXXXVII, tell the story of Israel in captivity and delivered.

The Song of Simeon concludes the vingt psalmes derniers, traduitz par Clément Marot (Twenty Last Psalms, translated by Clément Marot). This is the only extract from the New Testament included in the Psalms of David. The canticle is an exhortation to the chosen people.

Par le désert de mes peines, mon âme va haletant (Through the desert of my suffering, my souls pants for breath), the first words of the last chanson spirituelle composed by Goudimel, were written by his contemporary Antoine de la Roche-Chandieu. This new form marks, with the magnificent Octonaires de la Vanité du Monde and the Cantiques Spirituels, the development of religious song in French, later to become a part of worship; after the Reformation, the Counter-Reformation extended considerably the use of French in the song of the Church. The Reformed Liturgy preserves living traces of older psalters through successive adaptations and the feeling of the psalms is still generally familiar to those who have inherited the Huguenot Psalter.

Bländande hypnotiskt i katedralssångerna. En paradiskt dansant transmusik åtta hundra år före jättediskoteken på Ibiza."
(Dagens Nyheter)

Until recently the rôle of women as composers and performers of both sacred and secular music during the Middle Ages has been seriously underestimated. This disc, sung by the all-female group Musica Ficta, reveals how well suited to women's voices are music from Notre-Dame in Paris and the songs of many trouvères (the northern counterparts of the troubadours of Languedoc). The latter songs, for instance, often feature female protagonists and present different perspectives on love and life to those by their male counterparts.

The Chansonnier Cordiforme is a songbook, probably copied in 1475 for a roguish but musically cultivated priest named Jean de Montchenu – a contemporary chronicler called him ‘dissolute and full of all the vices’. The beautiful manuscript containing 43 songs is, uniquely, heart-shaped and covered in velvet. This recording presents both a representative cross-section of the manuscript’s repertoire, the majority of which is set to French texts and is among the best known and beautiful of the age, and a portfolio of differing performance options including instruments. In addition to works by such luminaries as Gilles Binchois and Johannes Ockeghem – music of elegant melody, textural refinement, and sometimes startling harmonic turns – there are ingenious and anonymous parodies of popular songs.

The recently discovered Guerra Manuscript is an anthology of the finest pieces heard in Madrid during the second half of the 17th Century and was probably prepared for a high-ranking noble or member of the Spanish royal family. It contains a hundred vocal pieces by leading composers including Juan Hidalgo, José Marín, Juan de Navas, Cristóbal Galán, Juan Del Vado and Matías Ruiz, as well as others whose authors remain anonymous. Isabel Monar has been acclaimed worldwide for her concert and operatic performances. Manuel Vilas has collaborated with numerous groups, including Les Musiciens du Louvre, Al Ayre Español and Musica Ficta.

Ars Atlantica

Named after an eminent scribe at the court in Madrid, the Guerra Manuscript contains over one hundred secular songs from the second half of the seventeenth century. The anthology is a valuable repository of music from anonymous sources but also from Spain's very finest Baroque composers, such as Juan Hidalgo and José Marín. These expressive songs, largely on poetic and mythological themes, are performed by some of the world's leading interpreters of the genre, whose first volume in this series [8.570135] received great acclaim.

These are framed by instrumental works by other composers of the period to set them in a richer context.

Dietmar Berger, viola da Gamba

The Manchester Gamba Book is the largest extant manuscript of 17th century viol music, now kept in the Watson music collection in Manchester. Different in many regards from the later cello, the secrets of viola da gamba performance style are revealed in this priceless volume, including Gervise Gerrarde's Paven, the most richly ornamented piece in the instrument's literature. Other contributions include settings of popular English songs of the period, and from otherwise unknown musicians such as Stephen Goodall and Richard Sumarte.

The feats of King Arthur and his Knights have inspired artistic creation in many art forms. In this disc we hear how troubadours spread their stories and we journey through twelfth-, thirteenth- and fourteenth-century Europe to encounter the Arthurian musical traditions of Germany, Spain, France and England. Full of allusions to legend, and also to contemporary events, the songs are masterpieces of their time. The composers include Alonso X el Sabio of Spain and Richard the Lionheart, whose Je nulls homs priz is one of the most beautiful of all medieval songs.

Image Tudor Organ Music (Tallis / Redford / Tomkins)
English organists of the early sixteenth century contributed roughly one hundred polyphonic keyboard works based on liturgical plainsong which survive in manuscript copy. These settings, typically arrangements of hymns and antiphons, found their inspiration in the familiar plainsong of the day, but the beauty of these works often lies in the nuanced turns of melodic line and in the metrical sophistication resulting from the build-up of two or three independent contrapuntal lines. Many of these works may have been conceived as contributions to the regular practice of alternatim performance, in which the organist and choir would have alternated verses in the presentation of a single hymn, but the keyboard works appear to have developed a life of their own both as pedagogical works and as independent keyboard music. Given their origins in the world of small vocal works, many of the individual movements retain the delicacy of the miniature, allowing the composer the luxury of concentrating on one or two elaborative techniques.
