Image Carmen
Arthaus presents a sensational filmed document from the musical legacy of Carlos Kleiber: The wonderful staging of "Carmen" by director Franco Zeffirelli in a live recording from the Vienna State Opera in 1978. The meticulous conductor only ever conducted a highly selected repertoire and among his very few audio and video recordings are only seven complete operas. The Zefirelli staging is the only premiere that Kleiber ever conducted. In December 1978, the masterly Franco Zefirelli created a colourful and atmospheric imagery while the musical genius of Kleiber drew from the music a rhythmic vitality and subtle passion that never lost its transparency and lightness. Carlos Kleiber conducted an extraordinary cast. Plácido Domingo, still the young lyrical tenor, starred as "Don Jose", and Elena Obraztsova gave a wonderful natural "Carmen", a far cry from the usual she-devil erotic cliché. The cast was completed by the young Isobel Buchanan who stood in at this production at short notice and included Yuri Mazurok who was later to become a high ranking Verdi baritone.

Live from the Zurich Opera House, 1999

The legendary director Ruth Berghaus created this staging of Carl Maria von Weber's Der Freischütz as a gripping theatrical experience for the Zurich Opera in 1993. Its revival in 1999 was a roaring success. With sets by Hartmut Meyer and costumes by Marie-Louise Strandt, Berghaus's staging avoids the local peasant colour conventionally associated with Weber's opera. The chorus and orchestra of the Zurich Opera House are conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt, universally celebrated for the structural transparency of his interpretations, his intellectual penetration and his emotional understanding of both music and opera plot. And last but not least an all-star cast made this production a highly memorable event: the dramatic soprano Inga Nielsen as Agathe, one of her best roles, the Swedish soprano Malin Hartelius as Ännchen, the sought-after Heldentenor Peter Seiffert, who gives a convincing passionate Max, and many others.

Stage director: Robert Carsen
Live from the Teatro degli Arcimboldi, Milan, 2004

When Canadian opera director Robert Carsen produced his intense staging of Francis Poulenc's compelling opera Dialogues des Carmélites in 2001, it impressed audiences and critics alike, and also gained the interest of Riccardo Muti, who arranged for the production to be staged at La Scala, Milan. Muti himself conducted Orchestra and Chorus of La Scala and a superb, handpicked cast of singers. German soprano Dagmar Schellenberger, who received much critical acclaim for her debut at La Scala, takes the role of the young aristocrat Blanche who, during the French Revolution, seeks salvation in a convent. Following a decree dissolving all the country's religious houses, the Carmelite nuns take a vow of martyrdom and sing their way to the scaffold. The last to die is Blanche, together with Soeur Constance, sung by the American soprano Laura Aikin. The production was particularly notable for the participation of Anja Silja, one of the greatest singers of our times, as Madame de Croissy.

Live from the Salzburg Festival 1982

This production of Mozart's Zauberflöte received enormous and unanimous approval when it was premiered in Salzburg. The theatre wizard Jean-Pierre Ponnelle created a staging which became part and parcel of the festival programme for over nine years and soon acquired the status of a legend. Of course, none of that would have had the same appeal if it had not been in accord with Mozart's music, performed with perfect blend of lightness and pathos, humour and profundity, by James Levine and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Nor would it all have worked without a truly Festival-worthy cast of singers: the Finnish bass Martti Talvela, who departed way too soon in 1989, in his famous role as Sarastro, the incomparable Edita Gruberová as "the best-ever Queen of the Night" (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung), the legendary Tamino Peter Schreier as well as the petite, lyrical soprano Ileana Cotruba? as Pamina. Further, Christian Boesch, who sang the role of his life with Papageno, was credited most for his performance in this legendary Zauberflöte.

Live from the Zurich Opera House, 2001

Gluck's wonderful but neglected 1774 opera Iphigénie en Tauride, inspired by the Greek legend, is treated with forceful and convincing simplicity in Claus Guth's revolutionary production staged at the Zurich Opera House. The psychological drama in a tense atmosphere of fears and traumas is underlined by Guth's use of huge masks and enclosed spaces. Conductor William Christie and his typically transparent but never cold orchestral sound perfectly match the descriptive elements in Gluck's score, while the Armenian mezzosoprano Juliette Galstian as a fabulously good Iphigénie, the leading American opera baritone Rodney Gilfry as Oreste and the late South African tenor Deon van der Walt as Pylade head a superb cast.

Live from the Oper Köln, 1987

This Cologne Opera production, of one of Rossini's most brilliant compositions, was directed by Michael Hampe and boasts a star-studded cast with Ileana Cotruba?, Carlos Feller, David Kuebler and Alberto Rinaldi. Rossini's opera is a perennial favourite and tells the story of a servant girl, accused of stealing a silver spoon. She is brought to trial by the Justice of the Peace, whose advances she has repulsed, and is condemned to death. Tragedy turns to comedy when, just before the execution is due to take place, it is discovered that the real thief is a magpie. Bruno Bartoletti conducts this lively and colourful production, designed by Mauro Pagano.

Giacomo Puccini's Madama Butterfly - the composer's self-proclaimed favourite work and certainly one of the most beloved operas in the repertoire - is brought to life at the world-famous Arena di Verona. This opulent production, directed by respected film and opera director Franco Zeffirelli, is sung by a cast of excellent singers. Fiorenza Cedolins is a sought after Butterfly singer and her Pinkerton is performed by the renowned tenor Marcello Giordani. The celebrated operatic baritone Juan Pons gives the principled United States consul Sharpless. The performance is led by long-established Arena di Verona conductor Daniel Oren with all the splendour that a Puccini opera demands. The sum of all this is a gloriously sung musical experience.

Live from the Teatro Regio di Parma, 2001

This production of Vincenzo Bellini's masterpiece Norma is extraordinary in many aspects. Staged by Italian director and filmmaker Roberto Andó at the Teatro Regio in Parma, it gathered international stars like American soprano June Anderson as Norma, whose lyric voice shines particularly brightly against the softer sound-texture of historic instruments, and rising star Daniela Barcellona as well as Russian bass lldar Abdrazakov. The ensemble's velvety tone and transparent playing enabled a constant musical exchange between orchestra and singers, which complemented the exquisite voices perfectly. Fabio Biondi's transparent conducting and the authentic performance practice of Europa Galante illuminated the musical structure of Bellini's opera and provided a new perspective on early 19th-century opera.

Live from the San Francisco Opera, 1989

Antonio Vivaldi wrote hundreds of largely famous instrumental works, and his glorious church music is well known; but it wasn't until recent decades that his operas - of which he is said to have created more than fifty - were resurrected. Orlando furioso occupies a central and very significant place among Vivaldi's works. Not only does the whole score of this opera demonstrate its composer's full, creative maturity, but its outstanding features are also an extraordinary musical beauty, an attractive recitative line and a balance thus created between the various parts of the dramatic and musical whole. This exceptional musical achievement was no doubt partly due to the famous theme of the original story, as well as the literary and dramatic qualities of a first-rate libretto.

Pier Luigi Pizzi's 1979 production of Orlando furioso in Verona marked the beginning of contemporary international interest in Antonio Vivaldi's operas. Ten years later the same director once more produced this work at the San Francisco Opera, where it was a great success.

Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro alla Scala / Riccardo Muti

Wiener Philharmoniker; Konzertvereinigung Wiener Staatsopernchor / James Levine

Stage director: Jean-Pierre Ponnelle

Stage director: Michael Hampe

Europa Galante; Coro del Festival Verdi / Fabio Biondi

Stage director: Roberto Andò

Stage director: Pier Luigi Pizzi
